The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team, playing its fourth dual in two days, had a competitive match but won six of their matches to beat the Moorhead Spuds 6-1 in a dual played in Moorhead. The dual was supposed to be played on Thursday, but because of the forecast of rain all day on Thursday, they moved the match to Wednesday. “The girls played well and Moorhead is a good team,” said Pirate Coach Sue Tiedemann.
The first match complete was Emma Osborn at second singles and she cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory. “Emma played well,” said Coach Tiedemann. “She had a great day and the way she can drive the ball it works well when it is windy like it was today.”
The first doubles team of Halle Winjum and Emma Gunderson played a solid match while getting a 6-2, 6-2 victory. “They are good friends and it showed with the wind today because they were able to communicate even though it was windy and they couldn’t hear each other,” said Coach Tiedemann. “They played well and had a nice win.”
Isabelle Smith was the third Pirate to pick up a victory with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at fourth singles. “She is fitting in great,” said Coach Tiedemann. “She is showing she belongs in the varsity lineup in her matches and also the challenge matches in practice.”
Crookston clinched the game-winning match with a win at third singles when Brekken Tull won 6-4, 6-2 for a 4-0 team score. “Brekken battled after having three competitive matches yesterday,” said Coach Tiedemann. “She played well and picked up a good win.”
Third doubles picked up the fifth win with Kaylie Clauson and Morgan Nelson picking up a hard-fought 6-2, 6-3 victory. “Kaylie and Morgan played well together again today,” said Coach Tiedemann. “They had a nice win and worked hard against a pretty good team.”
The second doubles team of Hannah Lindemoen and Abby Borowicz won a marathon two-plus hour three-set match. They lost the first set 6-4 before bouncing back and winning the next two sets 7-5 and 12-10. “That was a nice win after being down in the second set,” said Coach Tiedemann. “Abby had some nice net play and Hannah drove the ball well. They had a similar match against Pequot Lakes yesterday so there is no quit in them.”
Crookston improves to 5-1 on the year and will host Thief River Falls on Tuesday.
