ROSEAU PULLS AWAY TO BEAT PIRATE BOYS BASKETBALL 60-47

The Roseau Rams used an 8-0 run halfway through the second half to build a double-digit lead and held on the rest of the way for a 60-47 victory over the Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team on Senior Night in a Section 8AA matchup played in Crookston.  Roseau had five players score double-figures in a balanced offensive attack.

Roseau started the game on an 8-0 run with five points from Jack Hirst and three points from Jacob Lindemann (UND Football recruit).  “We were playing lethargic out of the gates and not ready to go,” said Pirate Coach Greg Garmen. “We were weak and they are big and you have to be ready to play physical against them and we weren’t.”  Crookston finally got on the board four and a half minutes into the game when Walker Winjum made a three-pointer and followed with a free throw on the next possession and the Pirates trailed 8-4.  Roseau answered and built a 17-8 lead halfway through the first half. Crookston started to figure things out on the offensive end and went on a 7-0 run behind a Jaden Lubarski baseline jump shot, a Nick Garmen basket, and a Winjum three-pointer brought the Pirates within two points (17-15) with less than seven minutes remaining in the half.  Roseau stopped the run with a Lindemann basket in the paint only to have Crookston answer with another run, this time a 6-0 run.  Lubarski started the run with a three-pointer and he followed it with a basket on the next possession for a 20-19 Pirate lead.  A few seconds later, Roseau’s Lindemann picked up his third foul and Caden Osborn made a free throw for a 21-19 lead with 6:20 left in the half.  Roseau stopped the run with a free throw before Nick Garmen converted a three-point play to give the Pirates their biggest lead of the half at 24-20.  Roseau regained the lead with five straight points, but Crookston answered with two free throws from Osborn to regain the lead 26-25.  Roseau ended the half by scoring the final five points and took a 43-37 lead into halftime.  “I thought we settled down and started playing better later in the half,” said Coach Garmen. “Walker had a nice half and gave us a nice spark tonight.”

In the second half, Crookston’s Lubarski scored the first basket of the game, but Roseau responded with a 9-2 run to take a 39-30 lead three minutes into the half.  Crookston battled back as Nick Garmen scored five straight points, but they couldn’t find a way to stop (box out) Roseau’s Lindemann as he grabbed an offensive rebound and scored.  The teams exchanged baskets on the next two possessions before the Pirates scored five straight points (Osborn and Winjum with two each and Nick Garmen with a free throw) and halfway through the second half Roseau led 43-42.  “It would have been nice to take the lead and who knows what would have happened,” said Coach Garmen. “We couldn’t get the lead back and they pulled away after that because we have troubles scoring and taking care of the ball.” Roseau picked up the defensive pressure over the next three minutes and scored eight straight points for a 51-42 lead with six minutes left in the game and Crookston couldn’t recover and the Rams cruised the rest of the way for a 60-47 victory.  “It was a tough one tonight,” said Coach Garmen. “We feel like we are right there, but we can’t get over the hump.”

Crookston falls to 8-16 on the year and travels to Breckenridge on Tuesday.  Roseau improves to 18-6 and will travel to Lake of Woods on Tuesday.
