The Crookston Pirate Boys Soccer team had a tale of two halves on Tuesday night as they fell 9-0 to the Pelican Rapids Vikings, with eight of those goals being scored in the second half.
FIRST HALF –
In the first half, the Pirates played well, and were locking up the Vikings defensively. They got a look at the net early, but were stopped by Viking goalkeeper Magnus Nordgren. With roughly 20 minutes left, the Vikings found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. However, though the chances would come more often as the game went on, the Pirate defense stood tall for the rest of the half, blocking shots and forcing clears, and that kept the score at 1-0 headed into the second half.
SECOND HALF –
The second half was the polar opposite of the first. Pelican Rapids scored within the first few minutes of the half to take a 2-0 lead, and from there the level of the Pirates began to drop. Colton Osborn kept making saves, but there was only so much he could do. In total, 15 of the 21 shots on goal Pelican Rapids had in the game came in the second half, and even when they brought reserves in, their offense continued to play at a high level. Overall, eight goals were scored in the second half, which catapulted the Vikings to a statement 9-0 victory over the Pirates.
Crookston falls to 1-4 on the season, while Pelican Rapids improves to 2-2-1.
