The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team played well, but the Hermantown Hawks came up with big baskets when they needed them to win a Saturday afternoon game 67-53 at the Crookston High School gymnasium.
FIRST HALF –
Hermantown started the game strong by jumping out to a 12-2 lead three minutes into the game. The Hawks had six points from Bailey Hermanson, four points from Olivia Johnson, and two points from Aurora Decker. Crookston trailed 20-7 when they put in a nice 9-0 run. Chloe Boll scored five points, and Grace Boll added four to bring the Pirates within a 20-16 deficit with nine minutes left in the half. Hermantown stopped the Pirate run with a Hope Kohanski three-pointer. Crookston’s Naomi Johnson responded with four points, only to have Hermantown respond with five points for a 32-22 lead with six minutes remaining in the half. The teams played even the rest of the way and Hermantown took a 40-32 lead into halftime.
SECOND HALF –
Hermantown scored the first five points of the second half before Crookston responded with seven points. Chloe Boll scored four points, and Naomi Johnson made a three-pointer to bring the Pirates within a 45-39 deficit. Hermantown answered in a big way as they went on an 11-0 run. Five Hawk players scored in the run, with Olivia Johnson and Annika Nelson scoring three points. Decker and Kohanski added a basket each, and Danika Bolf made a free throw, and Hermantown led 56-39. A few minutes later, Hermantown led 61-45 when Crookston rattled off eight straight points. Chloe Boll scored six points, Joey Nesseth added two points, and Crookston trailed 61-53 with 2:25 left in the game. Crookston didn’t score the rest of the way and Hermantown won the game 67-53.
Crookston drops to 4-9 on the year and will host Thief River Falls on Thursday. Hermantown improves to 10-3 on the year.
