The Crookston Pirate Girls Basketball team struggled offensively and got into some foul trouble, but once again relied on their defense to carry them as they beat the Thief River Falls Prowlers 47-30 in a Section 8AA game played in Thief River Falls.
FIRST HALF –
Crookston had a great start and jumped out to an 8-2 lead and things were looking good early. The rest of the half was a little choppy with a lot of whistles and the Pirates picked up more fouls than they normally do and some of the girls were in foul trouble. Halle Winjum had to sit the final six minutes or so of the half because of foul trouble. “Without having her on the floor we were a little choppy and not as smooth on the offensive end,” said Pirate Coach Darin Zimmerman. “Thief River Falls was playing well, but we were missing a lot of layups and didn’t shoot well.” Crookston only scored 24 first-half points, but they only allowed 13 Prowler points for a 24-13 lead going into halftime. “I thought we played good defense,” said Coach Zimmerman. “We weren’t as effective as we usually are, but we still played well defensively.”
SECOND HALF
The second half was almost the same as the first. Crookston got into more foul trouble and the Pirates missed a bunch of layups and shots and never had a big run. Although, the Pirates built a lead of 25 points before putting the bench in to finish the game. Crookston held on for a 47-30 victory. “We were struggling to finish tonight and we didn’t shoot well,” said Coach Zimmerman. “It wasn’t our best game, but we didn’t play terrible either. We found a way to get the win even if we weren’t at our best.”
Crookston improves to 10-2 on the year and will host East Grand Forks on Tuesday. Thief River Falls drops to 7-7 on the year.
