CROOKSTON PIRATE GIRL’S HOCKEY OUTSHOOTS DETROIT LAKES 58-15 IN A 9-0 WIN

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Hockey team scored four times in the first period while putting 28 shots on goal, which sparked the Pirates to a 9-0 win over the Detroit Lakes Lakers in a Section 8A game at the Kent Freeman Arena in Detroit Lakes and a regular season sweep of the Lakers by the Pirates.

FIRST PERIOD
Crookston started quickly with two goals, 17 seconds apart, three minutes into the game. The first was freshman Taylor Field receiving a crisp pass on the ice from Cassie Solheim that Field buried to get the Pirates on the board at 1-0. The same line on the same shift did it fast, with Solheim getting a rebound off Ashlyn Bailey’s shot and Addie Fee’s shot to make it 2-0 early in the game. The Pirates put the pressure on, but the Lakers goalie, Talyn Anderson, kept the Pirates trying to find different ways to beat her, but Anderson made the saves and no rebounds. “We were having fun out there,” said Crookston head coach Emily Meyer, “we wanted to work on some parts of our game, like communicating, playing position hockey. We did a good job of that and got shots on goal.”

Crookston finally broke through with two goals a minute apart in the last four minutes of the period. Emma LaPlante scored on a great shot from 10 feet, and a minute later, Bailey scored by sliding the puck on the near side of the Lakers
goalie. It was 4-0, and that is how the period ended, with the Pirates in the lead. “Emma had a nice shot that their goalie never really had a chance at. Ashlyn was aggressive in the offensive zone and used her speed to beat a defenseman and the goalie. We played a nice period, playing all four of our lines throughout the period and five defensemen.”

SECOND PERIOD
Reese Swanson scored twice in the second period, sandwiched around another LaPlante goal. Both Swanson goals were assisted by Solheim, who had a goal and four assists on the night, and her line with Field and Fee was on the ice for seven of the Pirate’s nine goals! Swanson rang a shot off the crossbar and down, and the other was gathering her rebound, walking around the goalie to her right, and putting it in an open net. “Reese had a couple of beautiful goals,” said

Meyer, “she has a great shot and, on the second one, got her rebound to the left of the goal and went around the goalie to get an opening and put it away.” LaPlante, who has had a nose for the net this season, scored her second and 13th of the game, and Crookston took a 7-0 lead after two periods. “Emma is a tough cookie and certainly knows where the net is and is having a breakout year,” said Meyer.

THIRD PERIOD
With running time in the third period, the Pirates scored twice; Taylor Field scored her second of the game finishing off a pass from Fee. Then Fee scored later, finding a loose puck to the right of the Lakers goalie and poking it in to make it 9-0, which is how the game would end. “That line is clicking now,” said Meyer, “moving Addie up there to take advantage of her vision on the ice and passing ability. They are starting to communicate better, and it’s great to

see them click.” The Pirates outshot Detroit Lakes 58-15 in the game, but the Lakers had a couple of spurts in the offensive zone and put pressure on them. Still, the Pirate’s Kailee Magasam stopped all 15 shots and a couple of outstanding saves for her second shutout on the season and the 6th of the year for Pirate goalies.

Crookston is now 15-5-2 on the year and will host the Roseau Rams on
Thursday. Roseau is 14-10 after a 9-2 loss to Warroad tonight. The Roseau game will be on KROX RADIO and the KROX VIDEO STREAM. The Pirates will then make up a game with East Grand Forks on Friday at Mayville, N.D., to let the three girl’s from that area on the Pirates team play before their home crowd. Parker Strand and Paetyn Strand, both from Mayville-Portland, and Brynley Coleman, from Hatton, N.D.
Detroit Lakes is 3-20 on the season and will finish off their regular season on Thursday at East Grand Forks.
