The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team was edged by the Park Rapids Panthers 4-3 and the Pirates bounced back to beat the Roseau Rams 7-0 in a triangular held in Crookston on Saturday.
CROOKSTON vs PARK RAPIDS-
The first match of the day was an important Section 8A matchup for seeding purposed. Crookston beat Park Rapids 5-2 earlier in the season, but the Pirates knew it was going to be a tough hard-fought match and that proved to be the case. Crookston built a quick 2-1 lead in the match. Halle Winjum cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory at second singles to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. “Halle played a great match,” said Coach Pat Janorschke. “She is such a solid player and she played well in all aspects of the game.” Park Rapids won the fourth singles match, before the third doubles team of Hannah Lindemoen and Morgan Nelson started a “little slow” with a 6-4 first set victory and then cruised to a 6-0 win in the second set to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead. “Those two (Hannah and Morgan) have played so well together this year,” said Coach Janorschke. “They picked up their play as the match went along and they played well.” Park Rapids tied the match at 2-2 with a win at third singles.
With the tensions mounting and a little more pressure with each point, Crookston took a big 3-2 lead when the first doubles team of Emma Osborn and Abby Borowicz won their match 6-2, 6-4. “That was a big win at the time,” said Coach Janorschke. “They are getting use to playing with each other and have played well the last week or so.” A few minutes later, Park Rapids evened the score at 3-3 when the second doubles team earned a 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 victory. The Panthers led 9-8 in the third set tie-breaker when they hit a perfect shot over the head of the Pirates and it landed in-bounds to get the win 10-8 and the match was tied at 3-3.
The last match left was first singles. Park Rapids’ Abby Morris won the first set 6-4, but Crookston’s Hayden Winjum answered with an impressive 6-0 victory to force a third set tie-breaker. Morris hit some outstanding shots and won 10-5 to give Park Rapids the 4-3 victory. “Park Rapids is a good team and they showed that today,” said Coach Janorschke. “We played well in most of the matches and their were a few that we weren’t as sharp. Give credit to Park Rapids because they played well.”
Crookston drops to 14-3 on the year.

CROOKSTON vs ROSEAU –
Crookston bounced back in a big way in their final match of the regular season when they beat the Roseau Rams 7-0. Crookston used a different lineup and won every match in straight sets while outscoring Roseau 84-16 in the seven matches. Emma Osborn played first singles and cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory. “She played well and having her at first singles really sets a lot of things up for us,” said Coach Janorschke.
Hayden Winjum won her second singles match 6-0, 6-2, and her younger sister, Halle Winjum won at third singles by a 6-0, 6-0 score. “We had the Winjum’s bump down a spot in the match and they played really well as we expected,” said Coach Janorschke.
Brekken Tull won her fourth singles match 6-0, 6-0. “She bounced back with a nice win and there isn’t many people that are going to beat Brekken at fourth singles,” said Coach Janorschke.
All three doubles teams won their matches, but they were a little more competitive as Crookston loaded up the singles portion of the lineup. Halle Bruggeman and Kaylie Clauson won at first doubles 6-4, 6-1. “We had them move up to first doubles and they played well and got stronger as the match went along,” said Coach Janorschke.
Hannah Lindemoen and Morgan Nelson won by the same score, 6-4, 6-1 at second doubles. “They moved up a spot and played really well,” said Coach Janorschke.
The third doubles team of Abby Borowicz and Addie Fee cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win to complete the sweep. “That was a solid match from those two. They played well and took care of business,” said Coach Janorschke.
Crookston ends the regular season with a 15-3 record and the Section 8A seeding meeting will be on Tuesday, October 5. Crookston looks like they will be the third seed with the winner of Tuesday’s Park Rapids vs Staples-Motley match being the top seed.
