The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Moorhead Spuds before falling to the Thief River Falls Prowlers 5-2 at the Crookston Triangular played at the Crookston High School Tennis courts.
CROOKSTON VS MOORHEAD –
Crookston started the day strong, dominated the first match, and beat the Moorhead Spuds 6-1.
Crookston won three of the singles matches, with Ashlyn Bailey winning the first set 6-2, and finished it off with a 6-3 victory for her first victory at first singles in her first try. “She had a great match at first singles today,” said Coach Gina Gunderson. “She is a strong player and played well today.”
Paige Abrahamson dominated the second singles match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. “Paige is consistent and keeps getting the job done,” said Coach Gunderson.
At third singles, Ava Martin was impressive in a 6-0, 6-0 victory. “Ava is a strong singles player for us and keeps getting better,” said Coach Gunderson.
Crookston won all three doubles matches. The first doubles team of Addie Fee and Kaylie Clauson, the second doubles team of Emma LaPlante and Georgia Sanders, and the third doubles team of Chloe Boll and Logan Brekken won their matches by identical 6-1, 6-1 scores. “Our doubles teams played well, and whoever we match up as doubles teams, they continue to play great tennis. I am proud of how the girls came out and played against Moorhead to get the win.”

CROOKSTON VS THIEF RIVER FALLS –
Crookston’s Paige Abrahamson picked up an exciting three-set victory at second singles. She won the first set 6-2. She lost the second set 6-4 before bouncing back to win the third set 10-2. “Paige played a great match and she continues to be consistent for us wherever she plays,” said Coach Gunderson. That was a nice win for us.”
The second Pirate victory came again at second doubles, with Georgia Sanders and Logan Brekken winning 6-3, 7-5. “Georgia and Logan play well together and it seems like they make matches close,” said Coach Gunderson. “But the find ways to win and played well today.”
Crookston lost two three-set matches, with Ava Martin losing a great match. Ava won the first set 6-4, lost the second set 6-1, and came up short in the third set 10-7. Emma LaPlante lost the fourth singles match in three sets. After losing the first set 6-2, she won the second set 6-4 but came up short in the third set 10-3. “We had a lot of good matches, including the third doubles match where we lost 7-6, 7-5, so we could have won three more matches,” said Coach Gina Gunderson. “But, they lost one three-set match too. It just shows how close we are and the girls on. both teams really played well and played hard today, and that was fun to see.”
Crookston is now 11-4 on the year and will take on Bemidji and Detroit Lakes on Tuesday, September 17 in Bemidji.
