CROOKSTON PIRATE WRESTLERS GO 4-0 AT MAHNOMEN-WAUBUN DUAL TOURNEY

The Crookston Pirate Wrestling team won all four of their matches at the Mahnomen-Waubun duals to win the tournament.  Crookston beat Red Lake County Central 45-23,  Wadena-Deer Creek 41-27, Pelican Rapids 44-24, and Mahnomen-Waubun 45-21.  The stories and results from each Pirate match are below.

CROOKSTON VS RED LAKE COUNTY CENTRAL –
Crookston won the first six matches, five by forfeits and cruised to a 45-23 victory over the Red Lake County Central Mustangs in the first match of the day.
Crookston’s first win in a match came from Nolan Dans at 126 pounds when he won by a pin in the second period.  Combined with the five forfeits the Pirates had a 36-0 lead to start the match.  Red Lake County Central only had six wrestlers and won their first two matches at 152 and 160 pounds by a pin and a 17-1 decision.  Crookston won the next match by forfeit before Ethan Boll won his match at 182 pounds by an 8-0 decision to give Crookston a 45-11 lead.  Both teams were open at 195 and Red Lake County Central won the final two matches and Crookston held on to win 45-23 to start the evening.  “Nolan Dans picked up a nice win against a section opponent,” said Pirate Coach Wes Hanson. “Ethan Boll beat a returning state entrant and that was a nice win for him.  It was nice to start the day with a win and a short turn around after the weigh-in.”

CROOKSTON VS WADENA-DEER CREEK –
The teams elected to wrestle 13 of the 14 weights in the match, leaving 195 pounds open and Crookston started the match with a Carter Coauette pin in the first minute of the match to give the Pirates a 6-0 lead.  The Pirates lost a hard-fought 7-5 decision at 113 pounds before picking up a win by forfeit at 120 pounds for a 12-3 lead.  Nolan Dans kept the Pirate momentum rolling and jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the second period before getting a pin for an 18-3 Pirate lead.  At 132 pounds, Crookston’s Cameron Weiland trailed 5-4 in the third period, but chad a nice takedown and pin to give the Pirates a commanding 24-3 lead.  Braxton Volker came out strong and picked up a win by a pin when he won his match in the first period and Crookston had a 30-3 lead. Wadena-Deer Creek stopped the Crookston four-match winning streak with a pin at 145 pounds.  Crookston responded with a first period pin from Cade Coauette at 152 pounds for a 36-9 lead. The teams exchanged wins and after two open weights, Wadena-Deer Creek won the last two matches and Crookston held on to win 41-27.  “Through the years we have had some good matches with Wadena-Deer Creek and Carter Coauette got us going with a quick pin and I thought Cam Weiland had the big win by pin against a very good opponent and that was a key point for us,” said Coach Hanson. “Braxton had a nice win and Cade Coauette had a nice pin and he had a great day going 3-1 on the day so we had a lot of nice wins in the match.”

CROOKSTON VS MAHNOMEN-WAUBUN-
Crookston started strong again and won seven of the first eight matches and cruised to a 45-21 victory over Mahnomen-Waubun to win the dual tournament by going 4-0 on the evening.
Carter Coauette got things going with a forfeit win at 113 pounds and Spencer Ness won by a pin to give Crookston a 12-0 lead.  Mahnomen-Waubun won the match at 126 pounds by decision before Crookston answered with five straight wins.  Three wins were by pin, one by forfeit and one by a decision to take a huge 39-3 lead and it looked like the Pirates were on their way to an easy win.  Mahnomen-Waubun won three of the last four matches and Crookston held on to win the match 45-21. “It was another win over a section opponent,” said Coach Hanson. “I thought Cade Coauette had a nice match, Cameron Hulst had a great win, Hunter Knutson getting some offense and a nice win and Hunter Kresl had a nice win for the full team effort, which was nice to see.”

The four wins gave Crookston the tournament team championship. Winning all four of their matches and getting named to the all-tournament team for Crookston were Spencer Ness, Cameron Weiland, and Braxton Volker.  “Zach Brown was sick today so Spencer Ness filled the spot and jumped in at 120 and was a big contributor for us.  Cameron had a great day of wrestling and had one of his better matches I have seen from him today,” said Coach Hanson. “Braxton continues to improve and is getting more physical and he had found a way to get a lot of bonus points for the team.”  Carter Coauette was 3-0 and Ethan Boll went 2-0 on the evening.  “There were a few duals where the coaches chose to only wrestle 12 weights so 106 was one of the weights that weren’t included so Carter was only able to wrestle three matches and he had a good day,” said Coach Hanson. “Ethan wrestled two matches and had two nice wins.”
