Crookston Pirates wrestling won a pair of duals 42-32 over Devils Lake and 50-24 over Grafton in a non-Section triangular hosted at the Grafton High School Gymnasium in Grafton, ND.
Crookston won their first dual of the night over Devils Lake with four-straight match wins helping the Pirates set the tone. Crookston’s Ethan Bowman started the dual with a pin 3:34 into his 106-pound match to give the Pirates an early 6-0 lead. “Ethan had a really good match,” said Crookston head coach Wes Hanson. “It was back and forth for a couple of periods, and then Ethan was able to get him in a pretty tight move to get the pin. Ethan got us rolling from there.” Crookston’s Nolan Dans pinned his opponent at 120-pounds 2:56 into his match for the Pirates first win. Zach Brown followed with a pin at 126-pounds just 1:02 into his match giving Crookston an 18-3 lead. “Zach Brown did a nice upper-body move to pick up his pin at 126-pounds,” noted Hanson. Braxton Volker and Cameron Weiland each followed up with Crookston wins via pin growing Crookston’s lead to 30-3. “Cameron Weiland found himself trailing 10-0 after the first period,” added Hanson. “He was able to battle back to get a reversal and pin which really extended our lead and helped to win the dual for us.” Ethan Boll added a pin 2:26 into the 152-pound match before Damian Hodgson closed out Crookston’s first dual win of the night with a pin just 66-seconds into his match at 195-pounds to close out Crookston’s 42-32 dual victory of the Firebirds.

Crookston took down Grafton in their second dual of the night with three forfeitures and a strong performance from their middleweight classes. Following a forfeit win in the 106-pound weight class, Ethan Bowman won his match 6-3 at 113-pounds giving Crookston a 9-0 lead. “Ethan Bowman again had a really good match,” said Crookston head coach Wes Hanson. “He was able to get an escape and takedown in the first period and then was mentally tough and stayed in good position picking up another take-down late to pick up a 6-3 decision against a good wrestler from Grafton.” Another forfeiture pushed Crookston’s lead to 15-0 before Zach Brown won by technical fall at 126-pounds giving Crookston a 20-0 lead.
“Zach continues to wrestle well,” said Hanson. After Grafton’s Alex Ibeñez won by pin 2:12 into the 132-pound match. Crookston’s Braxton Volker responded with a pin 23-seconds into the 138-pound match. Cameron Weiland won the 145-pound match with a pin 5:52 into his match. Hunter Knutson won via pin in the 152-pound weight class. “Hunter Knutson wrestled a really good match,” said Hanson. “He was able to pick up a takedown and kind of control that match before he was able to pick up a pin. He’s really wrestling well as of late.” Damian Hodgson picked up Crookston’s final win in the Grafton dual at 182-pounds earning a pin 4:52 into his match to close out Crookston’s 50-24 dual win. “Damian Hodgson went up against one of their best wrestlers and got a take-down in the first, a reversal in the second and then was able to get him on his back and finish the deal and it was a great way to end things off in that dual as we were able to run away with that one pretty good.”
After sweeping the triangular, Pirates head coach Wes Hanson was pleased with his team’s performance despite some absences due to injury, “I was really proud of how our lighter-weights, and typically our younger guys just fought hard and built up some really big leads. As we got into some upper weights were dinged up right now so it was huge for those guys to step up and really wrestle hard.”
The Pirates improve to 3-2 in duals this season. Crookston returns to the mat on Friday when the Pirates host a dual against Park Rapids at 7 p.m. for their final competition before the new year. Devils Lake improves to 6-2 in duals this season while Grafton falls to 3-13.
