CROOKSTON’S COMEBACK FALLS SHORT, LOSE TO WEST CENTRAL AREA 38-27

The Crookston Pirate Football team committed four turnovers, got themselves in a big hole, and couldn’t overcome it. The Pirates scored 20 unanswered points in the second half but it wasn’t enough in a 38-27 loss to the West Central Area/Ashby Knights.

1st Quarter
The Pirates start their drive with two runs by Ethan Boll with gains of 5 and 18 yards to give the Pirates a first down to start the game with momentum. West Central Area would force a 3rd down and long. Jack Doda would find the edge on the left side for a big 18 yard run to get the first down and get Crookston into the redzone on the Knight’s 15 yard line. The Knights would blow up a play on 2nd down, to force 2nd and 15. A false start would make it 3rd and 20 from the 26 yard line. West Central Area would keep the Pirates at bay and Jake Erickson would not convert on the 32 yard field goal to turnover the ball. The Pirates defense would stand tall on two pass plays, force two incompletions and the Knights would be forced to punt. Crookston takes over on the Knights 48 yard line. The Pirates would use both Ethan Boll and Tanner Giese to move the chains for the 4th first down of the game with 5:06 left in the quarter. The Knights would clog up the middle on the first two plays to stop Ethan Boll and limit him to only 3 yards to force a 3rd and 7. The Pirates go back to the well with Jack Doda would roll out on a play action pass to the right and find Carter Coauette. Coauette would get a 18 yard gain down to the 13 yard line. The Pirates line would pick up their men and Ethan Boll bounces off a Knight and knocks it in from 3 yards out to make it 6-0. Jake Erickson would make the PAT to make it 7-0 with 1:13 left in the quarter. The Knights would get their first down of the game with a Brady Lindquist 13 yard pass to Cole Anderson. The Pirates’ defense would force three straight incompletions, before on 4th and 8, the Knights would convert with another pass to Anderson and the quarter would end with the Pirates up 7-0.

2nd Quarter
The Pirates run defense would  come up big on the first three plays of the quarter. force a 4th and 7 on the Pirates 28 yard line. Lindquist would find Anthony Sykora in the flats but multiple Pirates would come up to make the open field tackle to force a turnover on downs. The Pirates would get the ball on their own 25 with 10:03 left in the half. After a run for a loss and a Jack Doda 4 yard run to force 3rd and 7, some miscommunication on a receiving route would allow a Knights interception by Hunter Gruchow to give West Central Area the ball on Pirates 25 yard line. After an incomplete pass, Nasir Dotts would get some blocking down the field and find the endzone with a 25 yard run to make it 7-6. The Knights would go for two with Brady Lindquist finds Cole Anderson on a quick slant to make it 8-7 with 8:19 left in the half. The Pirates would start their next drive on their own 32 yard line. West Central Area would again clog up the middle of the line, and force a 3rd and 7. Doda would step up in the collapsing pocket, roll to his right, and a lame duck pass would be picked up by Nasir Dotts. The first play for West Central Area, Brady Linquist would lob up a pass to the far right corner and Cole Anderson would come down with it for 20 yard touchdown to make it 14-7. The Knights would go for two and Antonio Romero would provide some good defense to break up the pass and keep it 14-7 with 6:35 left in the half. After a holding penalty on the return, the Pirates would start on their own 25 yard line. Ethan Boll bounces it to the edge on the left side, stiffs arms a Knight and runs out of bounds after getting the first down with a gain of 11 yards. West Central Area’s run defense would lock up Tanner Giese and then Ethan Boll on the next two plays to force the Pirates to punt. The Knights start their drive on their own 35 yard line with 4:00 left in the half. Anthony Sykora would take the direct snap and find a lane. He would juke a Pirate defender in the secondary to break free with a 65 yard scamper to the endzone. The Pirates would stop a Brady Lindquist run on the two point conversion to keep it 20-7 with 3:47 left in the half. The Pirates would start on their 33 yard line. Tanner Giese would get a block to give Ethan Boll the edge to give the Pirates a first down and some momentum. Unfortunately, the Knights would break up the next play in the backfield for a loss of 2 to force 2nd and 12. West Central Area would stuff Ethan Boll on the run to force the Pirates to punt. Jake Erickson would have a great punt to pin the Knights down to their own 5 yard line. The clock would wind down to end the half with West Central Area leading Crookston 20-7.

3rd Quarter –
The Knights would get the ball on their own 40 yard line to start the half. Anthony Sykora would almost break another big play before he was stopped by George Widman for only a gain of 9. Another Sykora run to the right would get West Central Area a first down. The Knights go right back to Sykora and with a 26 yard run after breaking three tackles down to the Pirates 21 yard line. A Pirate unsportsmanlike penalty would turn a 3rd and 7 into a Knights first down bringing the ball to the 10 yard line. On 2nd and goal from the 8, Brady Lindquist would find the tight-end Jake Norby on the right side and walk in for a 8 yard reception. The two point conversion is no good and it is 26-7 West Central Area with 9:02 left in the quarter. Crookston starts their first possession of the half on their own 37 yard line. The Knights run defense contained Ethan Boll to force a 3rd and 1, but couldn’t contain him one more play as Boll breaks out a 11 yard run to give the Pirates a first down. All momentum for Crookston would be halted when Ethan Boll would get stripped on 2nd and 6 with Isaac Kreft recovering the fumble with the Knights to start on their own 37 yard line with 6:33 left in the half. Nasir Dotts would get the ball on a jet sweep and fooled the Pirates. Dotts would use his speed to find the running lane and sprints up the middle of the field down to the Pirates 17 yard line for a gain of 44 yards. On 2nd and 3, a reverse pass would have Anthony Sykora with a 10 yard touchdown to Cole Anderson. The PAT by Beau Robinson was no good leaving it 32-7 with 5:45 left in the quarter. On the kickoff, the ball would get past the returner and the Knights would get the ball back on the Pirates 11 yard line. The Pirates run and pass defense would come up big on, forcing a 4th and 9. A false start would make it 4th and 5 and Cole Anderson would catch his third touchdown of the day from Anthony Sykora for a 4 yard touchdown. The PAT is no good making it 38-7 with 4:21 left in the quarter. A solid Ethan Boll return along with a horse collar penalty give the Pirates the ball down on the Knights 27 yard line. On the first play of the drive, Ethan Boll was met by four Knights to make it 2nd and 13. Boll’s next run would make it 3rd and 3. The Pirates would go right back to Boll and he would bounce off a tackle and find the edge and dive for the corner of the endzone for a 21 yard run. The Jake Erickson PAT was no good making it 38-13 with 2:46 left in the quarter. West Central Area would start at their own 16 yard line. Sykora would get a gain of 12 yards, with a facemask penalty against Crookston to bring the ball to the Knights 48 yard line. The next play, a botched Knights handoff would get the ball on the ground and give Carter Coauette a fumble recovery with the ball on the 39 yard line in West Central Area territory. The first play of the drive would go back to Ethan Boll with another first down after a ten yard run. The Knights’ defense would come up big the next two plays, with tackles for loss to force a 3rd and 18 with 40 seconds left in the quarter. Jack Doda would step up in a collapsing pocket to scramble for a gain of 16 yards to make it 4th and 2 and the 21 yard line and 20 seconds left in the quarter. Tanner Giese would pop out of the pile in the middle of the line and get the first down to wrap up the quarter.

4th Quarter –
The quarter would start with the Pirates trying to go back to Ethan Boll, and the Knights forcing a 3rd and 8. Ethan Boll bounced out to the right edge to make it 4th and a long 1. On the next play, Ethan Boll was tripped up right around the line, but he was able to stretch out to get the first down by inches. After a gain of 4 from Jack Doda on first down, Ethan Boll would hammer the ball up the middle to get his third touchdown of the game from 3 yards out. The two point conversion was no good, so the score remained 38-19 with 8:54 left in the game. An onside kick would take an odd bounce off a Knight and the Pirates Layten Fuentes would land on the ball on West Central Area’s 48 yard line. Ethan Boll gets another gain of 7 yards to make it 2nd and 3. The Pirates would get the Knights to jump offside to get the first down on the 36 yard line. Boll back to work with a 3 and 4 yard runs to make it 3rd and 3 with 6:50 left in the game. Boll would break a tackle in the backfield, and then he would find the edge once again for a 18 yard run down to the 11 yard line. Tanner Giese would get the Pirates into the redzone with a 4 yard run. A toss to Ethan Boll on the left side to find the endzone one more time for a 7 yard run. The two point conversion to Boll was good to make it 38-27 with 5:37 left in the game. The Pirates would try for another onside kick but this time West Central Area would recover this one on the Pirates 47 yard line. The Knights’ first play of the drive would get broken up with the Pirates getting into the backfield, but Anthony Sykora would get a gain of 12 yards for the first down. Nasir Dotts would get a gain of 5 yards to keep the clock running with less than 5:00 minutes in the game. A delay of game penalty would make it 2nd and 10. The Pirates would force a 3rd and 11 with 4:00 left. The Knights would get the ball out to the flats to Sykora and Ethan Bowman would get the open field tackle to force 4th and 10. West Central Area would go for it, and an incomplete pass would have a turnover on downs with 3:14 left in the game with the Pirates ball on their own 35 yard line. On 2nd and 7, Jack Doda would air it out trying to find Carter Coauette deep, but Cole Anderson would get the jump ball for another interception with 2:30 left in the game. West Central Area would get the ball on their own 25 yard line. The Knights would get the first down, and kneel the ball to run out the clock. West Central Area would keep their winning streak alive, winning 38-27.
