The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team traveled to East Grand Forks to finish a match that started on September 7 and was suspended because of rain and lightning. The match was finished today with East Grand Forks starting the match with a 2-0 lead and a lead in two matches. East Grand Forks won the match 5-2 to remain undefeated in Section 8A play.
Crookston’s wins came at first and second singles with Hayden Winjum and Catherine Tiedemann winning their matches. Winjum won a three-set match and Tiedemann won in straight sets. “They are two of our leaders and they showed why today,” said Pirate Coach Mike Geffre. “Hayden won a tough three-setter and she played well, and Catherine won her match pretty easily so that was nice to see the wins at the top of the line-up.”
Crookston lost a tough three-set match at first singles while losing 12-10 in the third set. “It was tough to go into a match where you already trail 2-0 and trail in two other sets,” said Coach Geffre. “East Grand Forks is the top seed right now in the section. They haven’t lost a section match and I told the girls we are close, it was a matter of finishing the matches. Overall, it wasn’t bad….kind of neutral. We saw some good things and we saw some things we need to continue to work on.”
Crookston drops to 4-13 on the year and will travel to Bemidji on Tuesday for a triangular.
