The #2 ranked Fertile-Beltrami Falcons football team saw a four-touchdown performance from Isaiah Wright. Still, Kingsland rushed for over 400 yards and won a close game 36-28 in the 9-player state semifinals at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
1st Quarter –
Fertile-Beltrami received the opening kickoff and got a first down off of a defensive penalty. The Falcons committed a penalty that put them behind the chains, and they had to punt.
Kingsland took over, and a few plays into the drive, Beau Wiersma took a 64-yard run to the house, and the Knights took a 6-0 lead.
Fertile-Beltrami got the ball back and Caiden Swenby completed a pass to Bryer Strem for a big gain. The Falcons quickly found themselves with a fourth and two, and Kingsland got a sack and the Falcons turned it over on downs.
Kingsland took over and kept it on the ground with Wiersma, who took a carry 19 yards. Reiland got three straight carries for a total of 28 yards. Wiersma got a carry for eight yards and first down and the the quarter came to end one play later.
2nd Quarter –
Kingsland started the quarter with a 17-yard pass to Ayden Howard to put themselves in the red zone. The Knights quickly found themselves with a fourth and four, and Reiland converted with a five-yard run. On the next play, Wiersma scored his second touchdown from three yards out. Reiland passed it to Courtland Drury-DeBoer for the two-point conversion to make it 14-0.
Fertile-Beltrami got the ball back and two plays into their drive, Swenby completed a screen pass to Bryer Strem, he took it 79 yards and was tackled one yard short of the end zone. Two plays later, Wright took it in from two yards out for a touchdown, making it 14-6 Kingsland.
Kingsland got the ball back and quickly completed a pass to Samuel Howard for 14 yards. Wiersma got two carries, the first for 39 yards and the second for 12 yards and a touchdown. Reiland ran in the two-point conversion, making it 22-6 Kingsland.
Fertile-Beltrami got the ball back, and Swenby scrambled and got it to Wright for 31 yards. The Falcons quickly had 4th and 14, they were unable to convert, and they turned it over on downs.
Kingsland took over and quickly got into Fertile-Beltrami’s red zone. Two penalties put the Knights behind the chains and on 2nd and 26, Strem intercepted a pass to give it back to the Falcons.
Fertile-Beltrami got the ball back with less than a minute left and tried to score, but they got behind the chains, and the clock ran out. The Falcons went into the halftime trailing 22-6.
3rd Quarter –
Kingsland received the second-half kickoff, and the Falcons were able to force a turnover on downs. Two plays into the ensuing Fertile-Beltrami drive, Wright got a carry for 54 yards and a touchdown. Strem caught the two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 22-14 Kingsland.
Kingsland got the ball back, and three plays into their drive, Wiersma again got another big carry, this time for 47 yards and a touchdown. Wiersma also ran in the two-point conversion, and Kingsland furthered their lead to 30-14.
Fertile-Beltrami got the ball, and after a first down, Kingsland’s Ayden Howard intercepted a pass to give it back to the Knights.
Kingsland took over, and the Falcons were able to force a quick turnover on downs. Fertile-Beltrami took over, and Wright got a carry for 28 yards. Three plays later, Wright took it into the end zone from 13 yards out. Sorenson caught the two-point conversion and made it 30-22 Kingsland.
Kingsland took over and gave a carry to Wiersma for two yards and three carries to Reiland, totaling 11 yards and a first down. Reiland completed a pass to Samuel Howard for nine yards before Wiersma got the first down with a three-yard run. The quarter ended one play later, with Kingsland still ahead 30-22.
4th Quarter –
Kingsland started the quarter with a run from Reiland for four yards before Wiersma got a carry for two yards and a first down. Wiersma got another carry for 19 yards, and two plays later, Reiland completed a pass to Parker Johnson for 10 yards and a touchdown. Johnson lost the ball, but it was ruled that he crossed the plane, and the score was upheld. The two-point conversion fell incomplete, and Kingsland furthered their lead to 36-22.
Fertile-Beltrami took over and gave it to Wright for a nine-yard carry before Swenby carried it for six yards and a first down. Strem got a carry for 14 yards before a holding on the next play put the Falcons behind the chains. Swenby carried it for 13 yards to get those penalty yards back, and Wright got two straight carries for 13 yards and a first down. After a four-yard run from Strem and an incompletion, Wright got a carry for eight yards and a first down to make it first and goal. After two gains for three yards, Wright got the touchdown for four yards out. The two-point conversion was no good, but the Falcons still made it a one-score game, 36-28.
Kingsland took over after a failed onside kick attempt from Fertile-Beltrami. Wiersma got a carry for ten yards and a first down. Two plays later, Reiland got a carry for nine yards to make it third and one. On the third down play, Caleb Sather forced a fumble and Swenby recovered it to give the ball back to the Falcons.
Fertile-Beltrami took over and gave a carry to Wright for six yards. After an incompletion, Wright got another carry for eight yards and a first down. On the first down play, Kingsland’s Howard got his second interception of the game to end the drive.
Kingsland got the ball back with 1:42 left on the clock and they needed a first down to ice the game. Wiersma had a carry for no gain, Reiland got a carry for five yards then another one for three yards. On fourth and two, the Knights elected to go for it and it was Reiland getting four yards on the carry, giving the Knights a first down, and the victory 36-28.
Fertile-Beltrami ends their season with a record of 12-1 and graduate seniors Caden Swenby and Derek Sorenson. Kingsland improves to 13-0 and advances to the 9-player finals.
