FIVE CROOKSTON GIRLS TENNIS PLAYERS TAKE HOME THE GOLD AT BOOSTERS TOURNEY

The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team had a strong showing at the Crookston Pirate Booster Carla Johnson Memorial Tournament played at tennis courts across Crookston. Besides Crookston, Detroit Lakes, East Grand Forks, Hibbing, Moorhead, and Wadena-Deer Creek were all competing. In total, Crookston won 15 matches on the day, including three 1st place finishes and won their own tournament.

First Round –
Crookston had an excellent start to the tournament, winning six of their seven first-round matches. All three of the Crookston doubles pairs got wins, and three out of four Crookston singles also won their first-round matches.
It started with Brekken Tull winning a close 1st singles match 6-3, 6-3. Kaylee Clauson and Addie Fee won their 2nd doubles match 6-3, 6-1. Isabelle Smith and Emma Gunderson won a back-and-forth 1st doubles match 6-2, 7-5.
Over at Schuster Park, Morgan Nelson, and Georgia Sanders took care of business with a 3rd doubles match win 6-2, 6-3. At Ray Ecklund Complex, both Coral Brekken and Calleigh Fanfulik won their 3rd and 4th singles matches 6-2, 6-0 and 6-4, 6-1 respectively.

Second Round –
Two pairs of Crookston doubles won their second round match to advance to the championship. Clauson and Fee won their 2nd doubles match 6-2, 6-1 while Nelson and Sanders won a close 3rd doubles match 7-5, 6-1.
Fanfulik won her second round match 6-2, 7-6 to advance to the championship in 4th singles. Tull and Brekken suffered loses in the second round, but still qualified for the 3rd place game with their wins in the first round.
Smith and Gunderson also lost their 1st doubles match, which snapped a 17 straight doubles match win streak for Crookston. Smith and Gunderson still qualified for the third place match.

Final round –
Crookston battled in three championship matches. The first one to finish was 2nd doubles with Clauson and Fee continuing their excellent play, winning the championship match 6-2, 6-2. Nelson and Sanders competed in the 3rd doubles championship, and they would win an exciting match 6-3, 6-3. Calligh Fanfulik would win her 4th singles championship match by a injury forfeit.
Crookston also had three 3rd place matches. Smith and Gunderson would win their match, winning the bronze medal in 1st doubles. Brekken would achieve a nail-biting victory 6-0, 5-7, 10-8 to get the bronze in 3rd singles. Tull would fall in her 3rd place 1st singles match, but still earned a respectable 4th place.
Paige Abrahamson ended her day on a positive note, winning the 5th place match in 2nd singles. Crookston as a whole won 14 matches throughout out the day which was the most of any team.

Tourney recap-
Calleigh Fanfulik placed 1st in 4th singles. Kaylie Clauson and Addie Fee placed 1st in 2nd doubles, and Morgan Nelson and Georgia Sanders also placed 1st in 3rd doubles. Coral Brekken took 3rd place in 3rd singles and Isabelle and Emma Gunderson placed 3rd in 1st doubles.
