JoAnne Mary Halliday, 85, of Crookston, MN, passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, with her devoted family by her side.
JoAnne was born on September 28, 1939, in Fosston, MN, one of 7 children of the union of Albin and Agnes (Halvorson) Dahlberg. She grew up on the family’s farm 12 miles north of Fosston, Hill River Township, learning at a young age how to do the dishes, scrub the floors, carry the wood in, take out the ashes, carry in the water from the well, and fill the reservoirs with water in the word stove. Although she worked hard as a young girl, she would not have traded it for the world as she had so many fond memories of these things with her mom, dad and siblings always there for love and guidance. Another memory she shared was getting rides behind her father’s horse Prince with her sister Ramona bundles up in blankets sitting on a apple box on the “Stoneboat” buggy to school on days when it was too cold to walk the 2.5 miles. At the age of 14 she was baptized and confirmed at the Asphult Lutheran Church. JoAnne’s education began with first grade in McIntosh, MN, followed by grades 2 through 5 at a one-room Ridgelawn Country School 2.5 miles from their farm, before going on to graduate from Fosston High School Class of 1957. After graduating, she worked at Francine’s Variety Store in Fosston for 3 years before moving to Crookston where for 13 years she was employed by Dr. Robert Simon as a dental hygienist. At Lengby, MN on September 29, 1962, JoAnne was united in marriage a to the love of her life, Kenneth Gordon Halliday. The happy couple settled into their home in Crookston where in the coming years they would be blessed by the births of sons, Todd and Mark. While Kenneth owned and operated Halliday Auto Service, for the next several years JoAnne waitressed at the Your Host, Country Kitchen, and RBJ’s restaurants. She later worked at Crookston’s Wash and Shine, a car wash and laundromat while she and Kenneth also worked in the evenings providing office cleaning services for several Crookston businesses. They truly enjoyed spending this time together. Sadly, Kenneth passed away on October 27, 1990. JoAnne was last employed at the Irishman’s Shanty until her retirement in 2018 at the age of 79.
JoAnne was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Crookston for 25 plus years before transferring her membership to the Church of Christ where she had worshipped to the present time. For JoAnne, work was her favorite pastime, as she loved to interact and visit with those around her, her warm smile and friendly personality being the ambassador with patrons which made everyone feel happy and welcomed. Her faith in her Lord and Savior was her rock, as she knew that “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus,” Philippians 1:6. Her beloved Kenneth and the boys were her greatest joy. They remember with great love her delight whenever she was able to see her children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren either at her home or somewhere else making no difference the location as long as her family was present. She also loved to talk on the phone to family and friends many hours each week.
JoAnne leaves her 2 sons, Todd Halliday, of Oshkosh, WI and Mark Halliday and his wife, Patricia, of Saugus, CA; daughter-in-law, Vicki Lynn Halliday of Oshkosh; 6 grandchildren: Emily (Brian) Kaprelian of Neenah, WI, Amy Halliday of Arlington, VA, Ken Halliday of Oshkosh, Jacob Halliday, a student at Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA, Joshua Halliday of Boston, MA, and Jack Halliday at home in Saugus; 4 great-grandchildren: Avery, Aspen, and Archer Kaprelian and Kali Halliday; 2 sisters, Ruby Wilde of Fosston, MN and Ramona Heden of Plummer, MN; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
In addition to Kenneth, her soul mate of 28 years, JoAnne was preceded in death by her parents, Albin and Agnes Dahlberg; brother, Russell Dahlberg; 3 sisters: Pearl (Wilton) Fjerstad, Darlyn (Pete) Kaiser, and Deloris Lund ; and from Kenneth’s family her parents-in-law, Vernon and Ida Halliday; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Bob (Jean) Halliday, Jean (Herb) Johnson, Betty (Andy) Parsell, Ellen Halliday, Molly (Sherman) Bliss, Philip Halliday, and Jim Halliday.
