Mahnomen/Waubun defeats Polk County West in Section Football playoffs

The Polk County West Football team fell to the Mahnomen/Waubun Thunderbirds 43-0 in the Section 8A semi-finals Saturday afternoon in Mahnomen.

1st Quarter
Polk County West started the game with the ball, but their first drive started on the wrong foot. A pitch from freshman quarterback Nick Satterlund was too strong for running back Jaycer Davis, as it missed him and rolled into the endzone. Davis would fall on it for the safety, giving Mahnomen/Waubun an early 2-0 lead. The Thunderbirds got the ball in great field position, as returner Zach Zima took it all the way to the opponent 30. A run-heavy drive featured running backs Tanner Stech and Eastin Bevins, but it was quarterback Blake McMullen to punch it in from a yard out to extend the lead with 7:44 to go in the quarter. Stech took the 2-point try to the endzone to make it 10-0. Polk County West got the ball back moments later. A personal foul and a big 12 yard catch from tight end Will Zavoral set up the Thunder in the red zone, but the Mahnomen/Waubun defense forced a big turnover. Satterlund threw a 99-yard pick 6 to Tanner Stech to put the Thunderbirds up three scores with 2:50 to go in the quarter. Polk County West got the ball back once again in the first quarter, which would end after a 10 yard catch from Sawyer Horken and a short run by Parker Bernhoft.

2nd Quarter
The Thunder continued their drive well into the second quarter. A hook and ladder play from Zavoral to Davis on 3rd and long, accompanied by a Mahnomen/Waubun penalty, resulted in a redone trip for the offense. The drive would stall, though, as Satterlund was sacked for a loss of 15 on 3rd and goal, and the 4th down carry went nowhere. The Thunderbirds took over with 4:30 to go in the half and quickly marched down the field into the red zone. McMullin completed three passes, all for first downs, to set Mahnomen/Waubun in scoring territory. McMullin threw a back-shoulder fade to Tate Houdek for a 10-yard touchdown with just 39 seconds to go in the half, and the failed 2-point try kept the lead at 24-0 for the Thunderbirds going into halftime.

3rd Quarter –
Neither team was able to sustain a drive on offense, as Mahnomen/Waubun ran four plays before throwing an interception on the half’s opening possession. Polk County West’s Greg Downs tipped and picked a short pass from Sutterland at the line of scrimmage to set the Thunder up in plus territory. Polk County West would give it right back two plays later as Stech jumped a route over the middle of the field. The Thunderbirds and Stech took advantage, as he broke off a 30-yard touchdown run to further extend the lead with just under 8 minutes to go in the 3rd. Stech added an extra point to make it 31-0 for the Thunderbirds. Polk County West’s next drive went three and out, and a blocked punt gave Mahnomen/Waubun an instant red zone trip. The Thunderbirds could not capitalize, however, as a fumble was recovered by Polk County West just two plays into the drive. The Thunder went three and out again and punted back to the Thunderbirds with 4:11 to go in the quarter. Mahnomen/Waubun turned to the reserves for the rest of the game, and they put together a 7-play touchdown drive capped with a short run from Manny Johnson. The 2-point try was no good, making the score 37-0 with just a minute left in the quarter. The Thunder ran a couple of plays before the quarter’s end, losing a total of 5 yards and setting up a 3rd and long to begin the fourth quarter.

4th Quarter –
The Thunder’s first play of the quarter went for no gain, and they were forced to punt again. The reserve unit for Mahnomen/Waubun ran the ball efficiently, but a long touchdown run was taken off the board five plays after a holding penalty. Six plays later, the Thunderbirds finally punched it in, as Drayton Tibbets ran in a touchdown from 4 yards away. Two false starts on the 2-point try led to a failed attempt, with Mahnomen/Waubun up 43-0 with 4:38 to go in the game. Polk County West had one more drive with their reserves on offense, They turned the ball over on downs with 34 seconds left, which ended the game.

Polk County West finishes 4-6 on the year after winning four of their last six games. Mahnomen/Waubun is now 9-0 on the year looks to win their fourth straight section championship against Red Lake County next week.
