Minnesota Department of Revenue reminds residents of tax credits

Did you know Minnesota has several tax credits available to reduce your taxes or increase your refund? These credits ease the financial burden for families, renters, homeowners, and working individuals. Do not miss out on these valuable opportunities! 

Minnesota offers these tax credits: 

Child Tax Credit 

  • Credit of $1,800 per qualifying child 
  • No limit on the number of children claimed  
  • Refundable credit, so you can receive a refund even if you do not owe tax 
  • Children up to age 17 qualify 

Credit for Qualifying Older Children 

If you have a qualifying child who is older than 17, you may be eligible for the Credit for Qualifying Older Children. Here’s how much the credit is based on the number of qualifying children: 

Qualifying Older Child Credit 
One $1,020 
Two $2,330  
Three or more $2,770 

Working Family Credit 

  • Provides a tax credit for working individuals and families 
  • Reduces state income taxes and increases refunds  
  • Refundable credit for working individuals with income below a certain level  
  • Credit is 4% of your earned income, up to a maximum of $388  

K-12 Credit and Subtraction 

  • K-12 Credit: Reduces your state income tax or provides a refund for qualifying education expenses 
  • K-12 Subtraction: Subtract up to $1,625 per child in grades K to 6, and $2,500 per child in grades 7 to 12, for educational expenses

Property Tax Refund 

Minnesota has two property tax relief programs: 

  • Homestead Credit Refund – If you own and occupy a home, you may be eligible for a refund if your property taxes exceed a certain percentage of your income. 
  • Renter’s Credit – If you rent, you may receive a refund based on your income and rent paid when you file a Minnesota Individual Income Tax return.
