NICHOLAS GETS 1,000TH POINT, ROSEAU HOLDS OFF PIRATE BOYS BASKETBALL

The Crookston Pirate Boys Basketball team got behind and tried to play catch-up the rest of the game. Every time Crookston was within striking distance, Roseau found a way to score and expand their lead and held on to a 65-58 victory in a Section 8AA game played in Crookston.

FIRST HALF
Crookston scored the first points of the game when Tyler Michaelson made two free throws. Roseau responded with eight straight points with half of them coming off Crookston turnovers. Jordan Borowicz scored four points, and Gunnar Lund and Rylee Habiger added two points apiece for an 8-2 lead. Crookston’s Caden Boike stopped the run with a basket, and Reggie Winjum followed with another basket to get within an 8-6 deficit. Roseau built a 14-8 lead before Boike added another basket, Winjum made a three-pointer, and Hunter Nicholas added a basket for a 15-14 lead with 9:18 left in the half. Roseau answered with four points before Nicholas converted a three-point play to tie the game at 18. Roseau responded in a big way with two Lund free throws, a three-pointer from Jordan Borowicz, and a banked three-pointer from Levi Dunham for a 26-18 lead with five minutes remaining. Roseau continued to build on their lead and took a 30-21 lead before Crookston’s Nicholas grabbed an offensive rebound and scored a basket for his 12th point of the game and the 1,000th of his career.
Roseau took a 32-25 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF
Roseau’s Lund scored the first basket of the second half before Crookston’s Jack Everett made a three-pointer, which was followed by a Winjum three-pointer, and the Pirates trailed 34-31. After a Roseau basket, Winjum made another three-pointer to get within a 36-34 deficit. Roseau led 42-39 when they went on a 6-0 run with four points from Jordan Borowicz and a basket from Lund for a 48-39 lead with eight minutes left in the game. Trailing 50-42, Crookston’s Nicholas had another three-point play, and Michaelson made a three-pointer to bring the Pirates within a 50-48 deficit. Roseau built a 59-52 lead with 1:22 remaining. Crookston’s Nicholas had another three-point play, and after two Roseau free throws, Winjum buried a three-pointer, and the Pirates trailed 61-58 with 49 seconds to go. Crookston fouled, and the Rams made one free throw, but Crookston couldn’t score, and Roseau made four of six free throws in the final minute to win the game 65-58.

Crookston drops to 5-19 on the year and will host Bagley on Tuesday. Roseau improves to 15-10 on the year.
