The Crookston Pirate Boys’ Basketball team got behind early and never recovered in a 76-42 loss to the East Grand Forks Green Wave in a Section 8AA matchup played at the East Grand Forks Senior High School gymnasium.
FIRST HALF –
East Grand Forks scored the first basket of the game before Crookston’s Reggie Winjum answered with a basket to tie the game at 2-2 in the first 30 seconds. East Grand Forks responded with 12 straight points for a 14-2 lead four minutes into the game. Crookston’s Jack Everett stopped the run with a basket, and Hunter Nicholas added two free throws to bring the Pirates within a 14-6 deficit with 13:14 left in the half. The teams exchanged baskets before EGF nine straight points for a 25-8 lead. Crookston’s Nicholas made a free throw, and Everett added a layup to get within a 25-11 deficit. East Grand Forks dominated the final six minutes of the half as they ended on a 21-7 run to take a 46-18 lead into halftime.
SECOND HALF –
East Grand Forks scored the first six points of the second half before Crookston’s Everett made a three-pointer. EGF had two offensive rebounds on the next possession and made a basket before Everett made another three-pointer to bring the Pirates within a 56-24 deficit. The teams exchanged baskets for several minutes, and after a Nicholas basket, Crookston trailed 66-30 with 11:21 left in the game. The Green Wave had a 71-35 lead with nine minutes left in the game, and that started running time. The final nine minutes went quickly as there were only 12 points scored, with Crookston scoring seven and EGF scoring five, and the Green Wave won the game 76-42.
Crookston drops to 2-4 on the year and will host Warren-Alvarado-Oslo on Thursday. East Grand Forks improves to 6-2 on the year.
