PIRATE GIRLS BASKETBALL WINS 9TH IN A ROW WITH A WIN OVER BGMR

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Basketball team started the game on a 12-2 run and never looked back as they beat the Badger/Greenbush-Middle River Gators in a game played in Crookston.

FIRST HALF –
Crookston had a great start and took a 12-2 lead under three minutes into the game.  Halle Winjum started the scoring with a basket. After a BGMR basket, Hayden Winjum scored, Emma Osborn made a three-pointer, Halle Winjum added a basket, and Osborn made another three-pointer for the 12-2 lead. “That is something that we focus on for every game, to have a good start, especially against a very good team,” said Pirate Coach Darin Zimmerman. “We came out and played some solid defense and made some shots, and that helped get us going.” Every time BGMR got the deficit down to single-digits, Crookston would answer with a basket or three-pointer and led 30-20 with two minutes left in the half.  Neither team scored the rest of the half, and Crookston took the 10-point lead into halftime. “We were able to withstand some of their runs, they went on,” said Coach Zimmerman. “We know they are a good basketball team, and to have a 10-point lead at halftime was good.”

SECOND HALF
BGMR’s Hannah Bergsnev started the second-half scoring with a basket before Halle Winjum responded with a three-pointer.  After a BGMR basket, Halle Winjum made another free throw and added a free throw on the next possession for a 37-24 lead. “Halle got us going with those three-pointers,” said Coach Zimmerman. “It was a good start to the half.”  BGMR made a free throw before Ally Perreault scored on a nice move in the post. “Ally picked up two fouls in the first half and had to sit most of the half,” said Coach Zimmerman. “She came out in the second half and played aggressively and had a nice half.”  Crookston led 41-29 when Madison Hoiland scored a basket.  After a BGMR basket, Crookston’s Osborn and Abby Borowicz added a basket each for a 47-31 lead with 6:29 left in the game.  BGMR added a basket before Osborn scored two points, and Jenna Coauette buried a three-pointer for a 52-33 lead.  Crookston held on the rest of the way for a 59-38 victory.  “We knew coming in they have a nice team with good coaches and good players so it was a nice win for us,” said Coach Zimmerman. “They are a physical team and play hard, so to get a win like this was nice.  The girls played well and I thought we played a pretty good all-around game.”

Crookston wins their ninth game in a row and improves to 12-2 on the year, and will take on Ada-Borup-West on Tuesday.  BGMR drops to 8-4 on the year.
