Pirate Girls Hockey shutout by Bemidji

Five different players scored to lead the Bemidji Lumberjacks to a 5-0 win over the Crookston Pirates Girl’s Hockey team on Tuesday night at the Crookston Sports Center. It was only the second time the Pirates have been shutout this season with four regular season games left.

PERIOD ONE
Bemidji would score quickly as Calliope Malkowski slipped in a pass from Bailey Rupp past Crookston goalie, Kambelle Freije two and a half minutes into the game and the Lumberjacks were up 1-0. “They got that first goal, and it seemed to set the tempo of the game which was fast and quick for the Lumberjacks,” said Crookston head coach Reed Olson. Crookston would get some chances on the only power play of the period with near misses by Jocelyn Field, Emma LaPlante and Addison Fee. “We did have some chances, and, in some ways, we were a little unlucky tonight,” said Olson, “but we have to keep going after them and not get down when we are trailing.” Bemidji would add another goal with about six and a half minutes to go when Megan Berg stole a Pirate breakout pass and went down the slot, spun around to her left and put a backhander past Freije to make it 2-0, which is how the first period ended. Crookston did end up outshooting Bemidji 10-7 in the first period.

PERIOD TWO
Bemidji came out quickly again in the period and took a 3-0 lead after 8th grader, Emma-Mae Swanberg scored on a rebound to the right of the Pirate goal before Freije could get over to that side.
Crookston took their first penalty of the game in the second period and Bemidji scored on the extra man when a freshman, Ava Corrington scored to make it 4-0. Crookston would get another power play chance late in the period and peppered Ava Myhre, the Bemidji senior goalie. Field had a couple in close shots turned aside, Adley Vigness as well. “We couldn’t find the back of the net,” said Olson, “we just can’t have those games scoring no goals and giving up four at that point. We must have a better effort to play with these tougher teams.” Crookston still outshot Bemidji 19-18 through two periods!

THIRD PERIOD
Bemidji took two early penalties in the period to give Crookston a five on three power play for :53 seconds, but Crookston couldn’t get on the board with Myhre doing a good job of squaring up and anticipating where the shots were going. “We just couldn’t get set up in their zone with a two-man advantage,” said Olson, “we had chances but again, couldn’t get it in the back of their net.” Bemidji would get their second power play opportunity just over halfway through the period and they would score at the 10-minute mark and it was their leader scorer, Rupp whistling a top shelf goal from the right circle for her 31st goal of the year to go along with 20 assists, including her two tonight for a total of 51 points and good for 4th in the State in scoring for the Sophomore Phenom. Rupp is the daughter of the former Pirate Stephanie Boll and granddaughter of Lucian and Karen Boll of Crookston. This is the fifth game in eight days for Crookston, “I’m not sure if we were tired or not,” said Coach Olson, “but we better figure something out with two more games this week and two more next week before the playoffs,” Crookston did outshoot the Lumberjacks 30-25 in the game, but fall to 11-9-1 on the year. They will have a rematch on Friday night at Roseau and turn around for an afternoon game on Saturday at Section 8A opponent Detroit Lakes.
Bemidji improves to 13-8-1 on the year and will be at East Grand Forks on Thursday.
