The Thief River Falls Prowlers used their size and speed to score two second-period goals and then held off a Crookston Pirate Girls Hockey team third-period rally to get a 2-1 victory in a Section 8A matchup at the Crookston Sports Center in Crookston.
FIRST PERIOD
The teams started the game feeling each other out, and Crookston had crisp passing and used their speed to get the first two shots of the game on goal. Halfway through the period, Crookston went on the power play, but 11 seconds later, Crookston committed a penalty, and it was four-on-four hockey for 1:49. Neither team scored, although Crookston’s Kambelle Freiji made a big-time save to keep the game scoreless halfway through the period. Thief River Falls continued to get shots on goal the rest of the period and outshot the Pirates 6-3, as the game was scoreless going into the first intermission.
SECOND PERIOD
Thief River Falls started the second period as the aggressor and used their size and strength to dominate the period. Just under five minutes into the period, Lila Dalager brought the puck up the ice and into the Crookston zone and passed the puck to Kali Knutson, who put a shot on goal. Crookston’s Freiji made the save, but the rebound bounced in front of the net, and Dalager kept skating behind the net and popped out on the side of the net and slapped the puck in the net for a 1-0 lead at the 4:41 mark of the period.
Thief River Falls continued to control the play, but Crookston’s Addie Fee got the puck in the slot and rifled a wrist shot off the crossbar, and the Prowlers held on to a 1-0 lead halfway through the period. With less than five minutes left in the period when, Miley Cota shot from the point, and Alexis Sawatzke deflected the puck in for a goal with 4:57 left in the period. Thief River Falls continued to control play as they outshot the Pirates 9-3 and took a 2-0 lead into the second intermission.
THIRD PERIOD
Thief River Falls started the third period strong and had several shots on goal in the first half of the period before Crookston started to pick up the offensive pressure. Crookston got a few shots on goal but didn’t have a quality scoring chance until Jocelyn Field put a shot on goal, but the Prowlers’ Makenna Carr made a save. A few minutes later, Field weaved inside and tried to split two Prowler defenders and was tripped to give Crookston a power play with 4:21 remaining in the game. Adley Vigness got the puck at the point off the ensuing faceoff, and she shot toward the net. Crookston finished the game with a flurry. Crookston was called for a penalty in the final minutes of the game, but Thief River Falls was called for a penalty with 1:09 left in the game, forcing Thief River Falls to call a timeout. Crookston pulled the goalie with 41 seconds remaining, putting pressure on the TRF defense. Field had a shot with 20 seconds left, but it hit her teammate. Vigness put a shot on goal from the boards, and Carr made the save, but the puck bounced to the side, the Pirates didn’t have anybody there for the rebound with 10 seconds left, and Thief River Falls Prowlers picked up a 2-1 victory.
