Pirate Girl’s Soccer shut out by St. John’s Prep

The Crookston Pirate Girls Soccer team struggled with a solid St. John’s Prep in a 4-0 loss in a Section 8A game played at the Crookston High School Soccer Field.

FIRST HALF
St. John’s Prep (SJP) came out strong and controlled the ball from the start of the game. Five minutes into the game, an SJP player was injured in a collision and had to leave the game. The injured player would return later in the game. 10 minutes into the game, SJP had their first quality shot from about 15 yards out, and the ball sailed past the net, and it was still scoreless. SJP had another shot on goal about 15 minutes into the game and had another shot 20 minutes into the game, but the kick sailed over the net. Less than a minute later, SJP had a kick on goal, and the Crookston goalie made the initial save, but it deflected in front of the net as Lauren Lenzmeier kicked the loose ball into the net for a 1-0 lead.
St. John’s Prep continued to control the ball for the second part of the half, and they were awarded a penalty kick with four minutes left in the half and SJP’s Claudia Ruzanic kicked the ball to the left side of the net, and it went off the fingertips of a diving Crookston goalie for a 2-0 lead. SJP continued to dominate the final four minutes and had a couple of shots on goal but didn’t score and SJP took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
“We came out and started the game well. A couple minutes into the game we started sitting back and weren’t as aggressive,” said Coach Sarah Reese. “We weren’t winning the 50/50 balls and we were constantly running and getting tired.”

SECOND HALF –
Crookston started the first couple of minutes of the second half strong and put some pressure on SJP, but they couldn’t get a quality kick on goal. SJP came back as captain Natalie Kayser meandered through Crookston defenders and scored four minutes into the half for a 3-0 lead. One minute later, SJP had another scoring chance, and the ball was loose in front of the net before Miryah Epema kicked the ball out of play. Crookston goalie Naomi Johnson took over for the Pirates in the second half and was busy as she made two more saves in a minute. 10 minutes into the half, SJP had another quality scoring chance as Johnson made a sliding save.
Crookston started to get some pressure on SJP for about five minutes before SJP started to control the ball. With 16 minutes left in the game, Crookston had a golden opportunity to get their first goal of the season when the ball was rolling in front of the net, but the ball was deflected behind the Pirates’ Brooklyn Waldal, and they remained scoreless.
SJP worked the ball in front of the Crookston goal, and Caleigh Robak found Lauren Lenzmeier in front of the goal, and she kicked it into the net for a 4-0 lead late in the game.
SJP continued to control play the rest of the way and won the game 4-0.
“We did a better job on defense with our positioning and saw people with more patience,” said Coach Reese. “We are still building our skills and confidence and have a lot of new (to varsity) players that are learning as we go and they are doing great, but we are only nine days in and they are working hard and have a lot of potential.”

Crookston drops to 0-2 on the year and will be off until next Friday when they play. St. John’s Prep improves to 1-0 on the year.
