The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team lost to the Detroit Lakes Lakers 4-3 and the Bemidji Lumberjacks 5-2 at the Bemidji triangular.
Crookston vs Detroit Lakes –
Crookston lost three three-set matches in a 4-3 loss to Detroit Lakes. The three Pirate wins came from second singles with Hayden Winjum winning in straight sets, third singles with Emma Borowicz winning in straight sets. “Hayden played well and that showed by a straight-set victory,” said Pirate Coach Mike Geffre. “Emma is a competitor and she played well to win her match. Those two continue to play well for us and they compete.” The second doubles team of Eden Haller and Hannah Lindemoen in straight sets. “That was a nice win after a close first set, they were able to win 6-4 in the second,” said Coach Geffre. “It was good to see those two compete and finish it off in straight sets.”
The three set losses were tough at first singles and first doubles. The third doubles team, made up of two seventh graders, lost 12-10 in the third set. “We lost 5-2 at Detroit Lakes earlier and lost 4-3 today and had a chance to beat them 6-1 actually,” said Coach Geffre. “We lost the three matches in three sets and that hurt because if we win one of them we win the match. That is how close it was.”

Crookston vs Bemidji –
Bemidji has a very good first, second and third singles combo and they won their matches in straight sets. “The Bemidji number one singles is very good, she is a stud,” said Coach Geffre. “She is something like 16-1 and is only a freshman and I was happy with how well Hayden competed and played in the match in the loss. There top three players are very, very good and it was going to be tough for us to win the match against Bemidji.”
Crookston picked up wins at fourth singles with Halle Winjum winning in straight sets and the first doubles team of Catherine Tiedemann and Emma Borowicz winning a hard-fought match 7-6, 6-3. “Halle continues to compete and play hard for us. She played well and that was a nice win,” said Coach Geffre. “Catherine and Emma are a good duo and they had to play well to pick up the win and that was a good match for them.”
Crookston had a three-set loss at second doubles with Hannah Street and Emma Osborn losing a hard-fought 10-5 third set. “They played well, but came up a little short,” said Coach Geffre. “They competed and hustled and that was a good match.”
Coach Geffre said he was happy with some things and upset with some of the girl’s level of intensity. “We saw some good things from some of the girls and we saw some other girls that need to work on hustling and playing hard for all of the match,” said Coach Geffre. “We will be addressing some of this in practice, but if some of them aren’t going to hustle we will put in some younger players that will hustle and if we lose, I am fine with us losing if we are working hard and hustling.”
Crookston drops to 4-15 on the year and will travel to the competitive Litchfield Tournament on Saturday.
