The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team had two close matches and lost 4-3 to Staples-Motley and ended up with a 3-3 tie with Moorhead after darkness forced the stoppage of the final match of the day. It was a strange day that started with a delayed start, two injury forfeits, and one match called because of darkness with the match tied at 3-3.
CROOKSTON vs STAPLES-MOTLEYÂ –
Crookston continues to use different lineups as the season progresses and the Pirates continue to show how deep and versatile the lineup actually is. Staples-Motley, a perennial girls tennis power like Crookston, won three of the singles matches. The Cardinals won the first singles match in straight sets, the second singles match was a roller coaster with Emma Gunderson winning the first set 6-3 before losing the next match 6-1 to force a third set. The Cardinals won the third set 10-3.
Crookston suffered a loss at third singles when Isabelle Smith lost the first set 6-3 and couldn’t finish the match after becoming ill.
Crookston’s lone singles win came at fourth singles with Abby Borowicz winning the first set 6-2 and had a 5-0 lead in the second set when her opponent suffered an injury and forfeited the match due to the injury.
Crookston won two of the three doubles matches and it started with a 6-3, 6-2 victory with Kaylie Clauson and Brekken Tull playing an impressive match to earn the win.
Second doubles suffered a hard-fought three set battle. Addie Fee and Halle Bruggeman won the first set 6-2 before falling in the second set 6-4. In the third set, Staples-Motley outlasted the Pirate duo with a 10-8 victory.
Crookston’s third victory came at third doubles with Paige Abrahamson and Jenna Seaver won a marathon three-set battle. Staples-Motley won the first set 7-6 before Crookston bounced back with a commanding 6-1 victory to force a third set. In the third set, Crookston battled and won 10-8.
Staples-Motley won the match 4-3 to hand Crookston their first loss of the season.Â

CROOKSTON vs Moorhead –
It rarely happens in tennis, but there was a tie as Crookston and Moorhead played to a 3-3 tie after the second doubles match was called, with each team winning a set, because of darkness. Â
Crookston won two of the four singles matches. Emma Gunderson played first singles and lost a hard-fought three-set match. Emma won the first set 6-3 before losing the second set 6-3. In the third set Moorhead won 10-5.Â
Abby Borowicz won her second match of the day as she won at second singles. Abby won the first set 6-3 before losing the second set 6-1. In the third set, Abby bounced back to win 10-4. Â
At third singles, Addie Fee lost a hard-fought three-set match. Addie lost the first set before winning the second set 6-4 to force a third set. Moorhead was able to outlast Fee and win the third set 10-8.Â
Kaylie Clauson improved to 9-0 on the year as she won her fourth singles match in straight sets with a 6-3, 6-2 victory.Â
At doubles, Moorhead won the first doubles match over the Halle duo with Halle Bruggeman and Halle Winjum listing the first set 6-1 before they answered with big 6-2 victory. In the third set, Moorhead pulled away for a 10-2 win.Â
At third doubles, Paige Abrahamson and Jenna Seaver continue their solid play as they won their match 6-1, 6-4 and the match was tied 3-3. Â
As darkness started to set it, the second doubles match was back and forth. Brekken Tull and Isabelle Smith lost the first set 6-4. They bounced back with a 6-3 win in the second set, but it was too dark and the match was called because of darkness, giving the teams a 3-3 tie.Â
Crookston is now 4-1-1 on the year and will travel to Thief River Falls for a dual on Tuesday. The match at TRF will be the first of seven matches in four days next week.
