The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team finished third out of four teams at the Northwest Quad held in Moorhead. Thief River Falls won the quad with 15 points, one point better than Moorhead and three points better than Crookston.
Crookston had one champion with Emma Borowicz. Emma had the longest matches of the day, but she was able to outlast her opponents with her determination to win all three matches. “Emma played really well and she had long matches, playing more tennis than anybody else today. She won a third set tie-breaker 14-12 to win her first match of the day,” said Pirate Coach Mike Geffre. “She has tenacity and does whatever it takes to win the match. She uses her determination and will to win and she did that today.” Crookston had three people go 2-1 on the day for second place finishes. Catherine Tiedemann went 2-1 at first singles. “Cat played well in the two matches I watched her play,” said Coach Geffre. “She didn’t have a good match against Thief River Falls and was frustrated, but she played well in the other two.” Hayden Winjum and Hannah Street went 2-1 at first doubles. “Hayden and Hannah played pretty well together and competed,” said Coach Geffre. “Their only loss was to Thief River Falls and they are a pretty good team so it was a good day.” The third and final Pirate to go 2-1 on the day was Halle Winjum at fourth singles. “Halle played well and had some tough matches,” said Coach Geffre. “She is really starting to stroke the ball and is playing some good tennis.”
Finishing third and only three points out of first place made Coach Geffre happy and frustrated at the same time. “It was a decent day and we only finished a few points from the top. We played 21 matches and it was good for the girls to play some good players,” said Coach Geffre. “We saw some things that we are improving on and we saw some things that we need to improve on before sections.”
Crookston will host the Crookston triangular on Saturday when they wrap up section play with a 10:00 a.m. match against Park Rapids and a 2:00 p.m. match against Roseau.
