The Crookston Pirate Softball team only mustered one hit as the Roseau Rams cruised to a 15-0 victory in four innings in the first round of the Section 8AA Softball tournament.
FIRST INNING
Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion as Roseau’s Brooklyn Hulst came out firing strikes. She retired the three batters on five pitches. Crookston’s defense struggled from the start, as the first two batters reached on errors. After a flyout, Chavelle Knochenmus singled. The Pirates’ right side of the infield miscommunicated, and neither grabbed the ball, allowing two runs to score.
SECOND INNING
The first two Crookston batters were retired before Cassie Solheim reached on a walk. The next batter struck out.
When Kylie Bjerk walked, Roseau added more runs in the bottom of the inning. After a strikeout, Brooklyn Hulst walked. One run scored on an error, and another scored on a wild pitch for a 4-0 lead. Ella Ketring singled and stole second base, and Olivia Simmons walked. Payton Remick doubled to the left-centerfield fence to score two runs for a 6-0 lead.
THIRD INNING
Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion with two strikeouts and a groundout. Roseau added more runs in the bottom of the inning as the first three batters walked to load the bases. Crookston made a pitching change and brought in Emily Bowman. The first batter popped out to Bowman before Ketring walked to score a run. Simmons grounded out, and another run scored for an 8-0 lead. Remick hit a fly ball to left field, and the Pirate outfielder dropped it, and two more runs were scored to give the Rams a 10-0 lead.
FOURTH INNING
The first Pirate batter struck out before Reese Swanson hit a line drive to the centerfield fence for a double, Crookston’s first hit of the game. After a strikeout, Kambelle Freije walked, but the next batter grounded out.
Roseau’s Kayla Moser walked to lead off the bottom of the inning. After a groundout, a run scored on an error. Bjerk reached on an error, and Megan Mooney had a pinch-hit double to score a run for a 12-0 lead. Another pinch-hitter, Ana Wensloff, singled to score a run. After an out, Simmons tripled to score a run for a 14-0. Roseau needed to score the runner at third base to win the game, and Remick blasted another line drive to the fence in center field, and the run scored for a 15-0 victory.
Crookston ends the season with a 2-15 record, and they say goodbye to the following seniors, Reese Swanson and Cassie Solheim. Roseau improves to 15-4 on the year and will play Thief River Falls on Thursday.
