The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Tennis team hosted a triangular with Moorhead and Thief River Falls for the first event on the newly done courts at Crookston High School. Crookston was able to get past Moorhead 7-0 before their dual with Thief River Falls was called early because of the darkness. “We had a great lineup today, and it’s because we are so deep. We can go all the way to our 12th player, and I would feel comfortable with them out there,” said Pirates Head Coach Tiedemann.
CROOKSTON vs. MOORHEAD
Crookston started the day with an impressive 7-0 victory over the Moorhead Spuds. Emma Osborn won her first singles match with ease 6-0, 6-0. Second singles had Halle Winjum win her match 6-4, 6-2. Brekken Tull continued her solid play with wins in long matches as she won 8-6 in the third set. At fourth singles, Isabelle Smith won in straight sets.
In doubles, the second doubles team of Hannah Lindemoen and Morgan Nelson coasted to a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Third doubles had Kaylie Clauson and Halle Bruggeman breeze to a 6-0, 6-2 victory. The last match completed was the first doubles match. Hayden Winjum and Emma Gunderson came out slow and lost the first set 6-3 but bounced back to win the second set in a 7-6 thriller to tie the individual match. In the third set, Hayden and Emma won 7-4 to complete the Pirate shutout. “The girls played well in the Moorhead match,” said Coach Tiedemann. “We tried a little bit of a different lineup, and so did Moorhead, so that was too bad. The girls competed, and even at first doubles, they didn’t play great together but found a way to win, and we have a lot of girls that are competitors.”

CROOKSTON VS THIEF RIVER FALLS
After rain caused these two teams to postpone a dual in Thief River Falls, the darkness cut this one short. “I think this dual could have gone either way,” said Coach Tiedemann. First doubles, first singles, and second singles were still in action when the coaches decided to halt the remaining sets. Brooklyn Broadwell won the first set against Hayden Winjum before splitting the first four games in the second set. Halle Winjum and Avery Skaar had an absolute battle in second singles, and disappointingly that had to be cut short doing the tiebreak. “They had a marathon match with sixty and seventy strokes at a time,” added Coach Tiedemann. First doubles was also halted, but they were given a chance to go a bit longer than the rest, with the Prowlers leading 5-0, but Crookston won the sixth game as the dual ended. Crookston got a win in third doubles with the pairing of Hannah Lindemoen and Morgan Nelson playing well together once again, sweeping the two sets 6-0, 6-0. “They are getting better and better, and I think they compliment each other really well,” said Coach Tiedemann. Overall, three of the matchups went to a tiebreak, so it was competitive all the way through the lineup. “I thought we competed well, and we learned a lot more from this match than some matches that we’ve played,” explained Coach Tiedemann. “We are going to keep getting better, and we prefer the good competition.”
Crookston is now 12-1 on the season and will travel to Bemidji for a triangular with Bemidji and Detroit Lakes next Tuesday.
