PROWLERS DEFEAT CROOKSTON BOY’S TENNIS 6-1 TO END THE REGULAR SEASON

The Crookston Pirate Boy’s Tennis team was defeated by the Thief River Falls Prowlers on Tuesday evening 6-1 to end the regular season. The #3 doubles team of Jack Everett and Elliot Bartrum were the lone Pirates to pick up a victory.

Crookston fell behind early in the match. The first match to go final was #2 doubles which featured Gunnar Groven and Grant Funk for the Pirates. The two had a tough time getting going in both sets and would lose their match 6-2, 6-1 to give the Prowlers an early 1-0 lead. The Prowlers would win the next few matches as well to build a big lead and secure the victory.

In singles, the Prowlers picked up a win at #2 singles as Jett Cornelius was able to outplay Reggie Winjum for a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Ethan Erdman was once again inserted into a singles role today and played at #4 for Crookston. Erdman won a game in the first set falling 6-1, and was then swept in the second set 6-0.

Thief River Falls won the #1 doubles match in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, but the Pirats won the #3 doubles slot in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 with Jack Everett and Elliot Bartrum playing well. That gave Thief River Falls a 4-1 lead at the time and guaranteed a win in the match.

The only two remaining matches that had yet to go final for the Pirates were Isaac Thomforde at #1 singles, and Sam Widseth at #3 singles. Widseth’s match would finish first. The freshman won the opening set 7-5 before dropping the second set 4-6. In the third set tiebreaker, Widseth and Spencer Hempel for Thief River Falls would go back and forth all the way until the very end, but the Prowlers would get the win claiming the tiebreaking set 11-9.

That meant Isaac Thomforde was the last Pirate to finish. Thomforde dropped his first set to a familiar opponent in Reece Janisch, but bounced back to win the second set and force a third set tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker it was all Janisch building a lead and winning 10-3 to give the Prowlers a 6-1 victory in the match.

The Pirates have wrapped up the regular season and will now begin the Section 8A Tournament next week. The team will begin their tournament on Monday and the Individual Tournament will start on Tuesday. It will be held in Crookston.
