RED LAKE FALLS TOO MUCH FOR CROOKSTON PIRATE SOFTBALL

After getting their season started last week, the Crookston Pirate Softball team was back in action this afternoon when they played the Red Lake Falls (RLF) Eagles. RLF came out ready to play, and was too much for the Pirates, winning the game 15-0 in four innings.

Bella Amiot got the start in the circle for RLF and wasted no time picking up two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 top of the first inning for the Pirates. The Eagles then got their offense rolling with back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the first inning. Gabby Casavan would then hit a Sac Fly scoring the first run of the game and taking a 1-0 lead. Jenna Coauette got the start in the circle for Crookston and would get the next two hitters out to keep the deficit at 1-0 after one inning of play.

Coauette would try and help her own cause with a leadoff double in the top of the second inning, but Amiot would strike out the next three Pirates hitters keeping Crookston off the scoreboard. “I think we do have a pretty good hitting team, but the girls just weren’t quite there today,” said Pirates Head Coach Sunny Bowman. “We faced some really good pitching last week and were fine, it seemed like we were a little scared today and I’m not sure why.” The Eagles would erupt in the bottom of the second inning taking a commanding lead. RLF would get a leadoff single, and after an out, draw two walks to load the bases with just one out. Jayden Breiland would then get hit by a pitch to plate a run, and Amiot continued her impressive day with a base clearing double giving RLF a 5-0 lead. Casavan would then knock Amiot in on a base hit, and a few batters later she would cross the plate giving the Eagles a 7-0 lead after two innings of play.

Crookston would get one base runner on in the top of the third inning as Kendall Bergquist was hit by a pitch, but Amiot once again got out of the inning without the Pirates scoring a run, and RLF would take a 7-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning.

Jenna Coautte would respond with her best inning of the game pitching, retiring the Eagles 1-2-3 in the bottom of the third. Crookston would also go 1-2-3 in the top of the fourth inning keeping the game at 7-0 RLF heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.

RLF would end the game in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring 8 runs. The first five hitters would all reach base, scoring four runs to go up 11-0. Two batters later, a double to the right-center field gap would score two more and make it 13-0. Crookston would get a little sloppy defensively after that, making an error on the last hitter of the game, and allowing the Eagles to go up 15-0 to end the game due to the run rule. “I said before the game we needed to avoid the big inning and they had two of them today,” said Pirates Head Coach Sunny Bowman. “We just have a few things to clean up and we will be fine moving forward.”

Crookston falls to 1-3 on the season and is scheduled to be back in action this Thursday when they host Roseau for a doubleheader. Game 1 will get underway at 4:00 p.m. and it can be heard on KROX Radio starting with the RiverView Health pregame show at 3:30 p.m. Red Lake Falls improves to 5-1 on the season.
