SACRED HEART GIRL’S BASKETBALL HITS 10 THREE-POINTERS IN WIN OVER STEPHEN-ARGYLE

The Sacred Heart Eagles Girl’s Basketball team used a big second half run and hit 10 three-pointers in a 71-52 win over the Stephen-Argyle Storm on Thursday night.

FIRST HALF –
Stephen-Argyle came out on a 6-0 run to start the game with four points from senior Regan Swanson. Sacred Heart would start to heat up and counter with a 12-0 run of their own. The run was highlighted by a three from Isabel Vonesh, and five points off the bench from Lydia Riskey. Isabelle Westman would end the run with a layup for the Storm, and after two free throws, they were back within two points trailing 12-10. The Eagles continued to shoot well, however, and after threes from Finley Horken and Isabel Vonesh, they pulled in front 19-14. Both teams started to get a little sloppy with the basketball, which benefited Stephen-Argyle, who would take advantage of the turnovers and tie the game at 21-21 from 3:30 until halftime. Isabel Vonesh has been known to knock down three-pointers at a high rate when she gets going, and she would knock down two later in the half to extend the Eagles lead to 31-24 with thirty seconds left. Stephen-Argyle would make a late free throw, and after missing the second attempt, Isabelle Westman would grab the offensive rebound and make the putback shot for the Storm. That would end the first half, giving Sacred Heart a 31-27 lead at the break. Vonesh led the way for Sacred Heart with 12 points and Lydia Riskey contributed 9 coming off the bench. For Stephen-Argyle, Regan Swanson and Isabelle Westman led the way with 6 points each.

SECOND HALF –
The Eagles continued to shoot the three well, and Leah Sundby would knock one down to begin the second half. Every time the Storm would answer, Sacred Heart would get a bucket as well to maintain the lead. After five straight points from Isabel Vonesh extended the Eagles lead to 42-35, Liv Efta would respond with a layup making it 42-37 Sacred Heart with 12:38 remaining in the game. After the teams traded a few buckets to make the score 45-40, the Eagles would take control of the game and go on a massive 20-6 run to pull all the way ahead 65-46 with just 4:43 remaining. A big reason why was the Eagles three-point shooting and rebounding. In total, Sacred Heart knocked down 10 three-pointers in the game, and when they didn’t fall in, it seemed like someone was their to grab the offensive rebound and put the shot back up and in. Alexis Lawrence was also a critical part to the scoring run contributing five points including an and-one to cap it off. From that point on, the game was never in question, and Sacred Heart would go on to win 71-52.

Sacred Heart improves to 11-9 on the season with the win. Stephen-Argyle falls to 4-13.
