Sacred Heart Volleyball falls to BGMR in Section 8A tourney

The Sacred Heart Eagle Volleyball team won the first set in impressive fashion, but the defending Section 8A champion Badger/Greenbush-Middle River Gators responded to win the next three sets to win the match 3-1 (16-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-14) in the Section 8A tournament quarterfinals in Greenbush.

FIRST SET
The teams battled back and forth early on with ties at 1, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Sacred Heart scored the next six points with Adley Vigness’ second straight kill followed by a pair of Lexi Lawrence kills for a 10-7 lead. The run continued with a Lydia Riskey ace, followed by a Gator attack out of bounds and a Lexi Lawrence kill for a 13-7 lead. The teams battled back and forth for a while and Sacred Heart led 16-12. The Eagles’ Lawrence had a kill followed by two Riskey kills. The Gators hit out of bounds on the next point to give Sacred Heart a 20-12 lead. The Gators stopped the run with a kill before Sacred Heart responded with Reese Chwialkowski’s kill, followed by a Gator double-hit for a 22-13 lead. The Gators scored the next two points before the Eagles Riskey had a block for a kill and another kill for a 24-15 lead. After a Gator point, Riskey ended the set with a kill for a 25-16 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

SECOND SET
Sacred Heart had another great start with a Lawrence ace and a kill, along with a Gator double-hit for a 3-1 lead. The Gators scored the next three points with a pair of kills from Kenzie Dahl and an ace by Raegon Kuznia for a 4-3 BGMR lead. Sacred Heart bounced back with a Vigness kill to tie the set at 4-4. BGMR answered with a 6-1 run behind two kills from Kylie Snare, a Dahl ace, and a few Sacred Heart errors for a 10-5 lead. Sacred Heart battled back to get within an 11-9 deficit after a Lawrence kill and three Gator errors. The teams were tied at 15, 16, and 18. Sacred Heart’s Riskey had an ace, and the Gators hit out of bounds for a 20-18 Eagle lead. Sacred Heart served out of bounds before Lawrence had a big kill for a 21-19 lead. The Gators responded with a big Dahl kill, and the Eagles were called for four hits, and the set was tied at 21-21. The Gators took the lead on an ace by Mya Bennet before Sacred Heart had an attack error, and BGMR took a 23-21 lead. Sacred Heart answered with a Chwialkowski kill. It looked like Sacred Heart had tied the match after a Gator attack went out of bounds by at least a half a foot, but the line judge called it in. The Eagles appealed to the official, but they didn’t overrule the missed call, and it was a 24-22 lead for BGMR. Chwialkowski responded with a kill to bring the Eagles within a 24-23 deficit before BGMR’s Dahl finished the set with a kill for a 25-23 victory to tie the match at 1-1.

THIRD SET
The third set was back and forth again, with ties at 2, 3, and 4. The Gators went on a 6-1 run for a 10-5 lead after the Eagles had four hitting errors and two kills, forcing a Sacred Heart time-out. BGMR continued to build on the lead and took a 21-13 lead. Sacred Heart settled down and kills from Riskey and Vigness before a serve went into the net. Lawrence followed with a kill, but the Eagles had two hitting errors and trailed 24-16. The Eagles Lawrence had a huge kill, and Horken followed with an ace. The Gators were called for a double hit, and Sacred Heart trailed 24-19, but the Gators Dahl had a kill to win the set 25-19 for a 2-1 match lead.

FOURTH SET –
BGMR came out firing on all cylinders in the fourth set as they took a 7-1 lead behind some big kills and Sacred Heart attack errors. Trailing 9-3, Sacred Heart when Riskey had a kill, the Gators had an attack error before Riskey served up an ace to get within a 9-6 deficit. Each time Sacred Heart had a run, the Gators had an answer. BGMR led 17-11 when Riskey had a kill, and Chwialkowski served an ace to get within a 17-13 deficit. Sacred Heart served out of bounds before Dahl had back-to-back kills for a 20-13 lead. BGMR led 24-13 when Dahl fittingly ended the match with a kill for a 25-14 victory to win the match 3-1.

BGMR improves to 27-4 on the year and will play Ada-Borup-West in the Section 8A semi-finals at the University of Minnesota Crookston on Tuesday, October 29. Sacred Heart’s season comes to an end with a 20-8 record and they say goodbye to the following seniors – Olivia Deere, Rose Votava, Reese Chwialkowski, Bella Effhauser, and Anna Kaiser.
