SPORTS FEEVER – October 21, 2021

The Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team will make their first trip back to the Minnesota State Class A Girls Tennis tournament for the first time in six years after winning the championship with a 5-2 win over Staples-Motley and a 5-2 win over Wadena-Deer Creek in the championship.

The last time Crookston played at state was six years ago when they finished second place with a 7-0 loss to the Blake School in the championship.  Members of the team were Elisa Samuelson, Leah Trostad, Alyssa Fee, Tori Demarais, Alyssa Schultz, Ally Tiedemann, Amy Follette, Katherine Tiedemann, Kendall Wahouske, Elise Tangquist, Nissa Brekken, Emily Ricord, Marie Sandman, and Jaeden Lizakowski.  The team was coached by Hall of Famer Mike Geffre and Brian Follette.  The team is pictured below.

This years team will be the 13th girls tennis team to make it to the state tournament and they will play Providence Academy on Tuesday, October 26 at 2:00 p.m. at the Reed Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.  Providence Academy had three losses on the year in duals and lost to Breck 7-0.  They lost to St. Louis Park 5-2, and lost to Minnehaha Academy 4-3.

In the Section 5A Team tournament, Providence Academy beat Holy Family Catholic 7-0, and in the championship they beat Sibley East 7-0 to advance to state.  It will be a tough draw for Crookston.

First round losers play at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m.   Winners play on Wednesday. KROX will be there and have updates.

Ben Trostad is a senior playing Men’s Golf at UMC.

Kaleb Thingelstad is a freshman playing golf at Kansas Wesleyan University.  KWU is done for the fall season.

Joslynn Leach is a freshman playing golf at Concordia College in Moorhead.  The Cobbers wrapped up the Fall season.

Brady Butt is a sophomore playing football at the University of Jamestown.  Brady didn’t play in a loss to Northwestern Iowa College on Saturday.
