STEPHEN-ARGYLE LEGION BASEBALL FALLS TO WIN-E-MAC AND RED LAKE COUNTY IN SUB-DISTRICT

The Win-E-Mac American Legion Baseball team had solid pitching and scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Stephen-Argyle 11-1 in six innings in the first round and came up short in an 8-3 loss to Red Lake County and were eliminated in the District 9 Sub-district American Legion Baseball tournament in Roseau.

GAME ONE – VS WIN-E-MAC

After a scoreless first inning, it looked like Stephen-Argyle was going to score some runs when Demitri Oberg led off with a single, Jackson Woinarowicz was hit by a pitch and Ty Winge had a bunt single to load the bases with nobody out.  The next two batters hit into fielder’s choices with the outs at home and the next batter struck out and Win-E-Mac got out of a big-time jam without giving up a run.
Win-E-Mac’s Remy Goodwin started the inning with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball, and advanced to third base on another passed ball.  After a strikeout and a hit batter, Bryer Strom hit a hard ground ball to third base and it got past the third baseman and two runs scored to give Win-E-Mac a 2-0 lead.

Win-E-Mac added two more runs in the third inning when Gavin Walker singled and stole second base.  Brandon Van Den Einde singled to score a run and Mathew Sykes singled to score another run for a 4-0 lead.

Stephen-Argyle had a threat in the fourth inning with Ty Winge getting hit by a pitch, Brody Pietruzewski singled, and after the second out of the inning Will McGlynn walked to load the bases.  The next batter grounded out to the second baseman and Stephen-Argyle’s threat was over.

Stephen-Argyle scored their only run of the game in the fifth inning when Jason Lindgren singled to left-centerfield and scored on a Mike Jacobson single to get within a 4-1 deficit.
Win-E-Mac added two more runs in the fifth inning.  Goodwin singled and stole second base, Van Den Einde reached on an error and a run scored on a Sykes sacrifice fly.  After a Bryer Strom walk, Gavin Haskett singled to score a run and Win-E-Mac led 6-1.

Win-E-Mac won the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when Kobe Hamre reached on a hit by pitch, Jonas Spry walked and Gavin Walker blasted the ball over the left-centerfield fence for a three-run home run to take a 9-1 lead.  After a strikeout, Van Den Einde singles, Sykes walked and a run scored on a Strom single for a 10-1 lead.  Hasket followed with his third straight single to score another run for an 11-1 victory in six innings.

GAME TWO – VS STEPHEN-ARGYLE

After two scoreless innings, Red Lake County got on the board in the third inning.  Peyton Fish singled, stole second base, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an Andrew Johnson ground out for a 1-0 lead.

Neither team scored in the fourth and fifth innings, but Red Lake County opened the game up in the top of the sixth inning.  Zak Kennet led off with a walk, followed by back-to-back-to-back singles from Bailey Hince, Isaiah Aquino, and Brady Leuthner to score a run.  Carter Williams followed with an rbi single to give Red Lake County a 3-0 lead. Petyon Fish kept the Red Lake County hit parade going with an rbi single.  Andrew Johnson recorded the sixth straight Red Lake County hit with a two-rbi singled for a 7-0 lead.  Zak Kennet drove in the seventh run of the inning with a ground out for a 8-0 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Stephen-Argyle was finally able to get on the board when Jackson Kekke reached on an error and Jason Lindgren singled.  After a strikeout, Dimitri Oberg blasted a double to the left-centerfield gap to score two runs to get within an 8-2 deficit.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Colin McGregor started things off with a leadoff single, stole second base, and scored on a Dusty Morely single to get within an 8-3 deficit, but that is as close as they would get as Red Lake County held on for the 8-3 victory.
