Stephen Taylor – Obit

Stephen Taylor, age 65, of Fertile, MN passed away at his home on Friday, July 3, 2026.

Stephen John, the son of Scott and Patricia (Rust) Taylor, was born on November 5, 1960, in Pierre, SD. He spent his early childhood on a ranch near Highmore, SD, before moving with his family to Fertile, MN, in 1972. Steve graduated from Fertile High School and continued his education at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. Following college, Steve returned home to the family ranch near Fertile, where he built a lifelong career. He operated the cattle ranch, raising both cattle and hogs, while also producing hay. His dedication to the land and livestock, combined with his education and decades of experience, made him a trusted source of knowledge for area farmers and ranchers. Even as his health declined and he retired from full-time ranching, Steve remained active in the agricultural community by working at the Fertile Elevator for several years. Nearly every day, he could be found at the elevator visiting with friends, lending a hand, sharing stories, or offering thoughtful advice. His willingness to help others and his genuine interest in people made him a valued mentor and friend to many.  Steve especially enjoyed gathering with friends for morning coffee at Northdale Station, where conversation and camaraderie were a part of his daily routine.

A faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fertile, Steve lived his faith through service and fellowship sharing his time with numerous church activities. He was an active member of the Ada Knights of Columbus, proudly earning his 4th Degree.  From a young age, Steve was deeply involved in agriculture through 4-H, FFA, and Boy Scouts. He remained committed to supporting youth and community events throughout the years. He was extremely devoted to the Polk County Fair Board where he was currently serving as the Livestock Superintendent, the Northwest Stockmens Association and the Fertile Lions Club. He also served more than 30 years with the Fertile Community Conservation Club, including several years as president. In addition, Steve contributed his time and leadership to numerous other boards, committees, and community organizations, always seeking ways to strengthen the Fertile community he loved. In his rare free time, Steve also enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Steve is survived by his mother, Pat of Fertile; his sister, Angela Smith of Yuba City, CA; brother-in-law, Randy (Jody) Burgeron of Crookston, MN; one aunt, Shirley Hansel of Waseca, MN; three nieces, Arika (Matt) Hitchen, Gina Smith, and Brooke (Bobby) Tiedemann; three nephews, Aaron (Tracy) Burgeron, Conner Smith, and Blake Burgeron; nine great nieces and nephews; several cousins; and many valued friends.  He was preceded in death by his dad, Scott Taylor; his grandparents; and several aunts and uncles.
