On September 23, at approximately 5:40 p.m., officers from the Grand Forks Police Department responded to the 1600 block of S. 16th Street in response to multiple calls reporting a reckless driver who had struck a pedestrian and then a tree, disabling the vehicle. The suspect driver was reported to have exited the vehicle and fled from the scene.
Officers arriving on scene made contact with the suspect, who was apprehended a few blocks away and identified as Ian Matthew Schneeweis. During the course of the investigation, it was discovered that two pedestrians had been struck by Schneeweis’s 2007 Honda Accord, along with a motor vehicle, and the entrance to an apartment building. An additional pedestrian was involved in the incident but was not harmed after taking cover behind the tree that was struck by the suspect vehicle.
The two injured pedestrians were transported to Altru Hospital and treated for non-life- threatening injuries. Schneeweis was also transported to Altru Hospital and, once medically cleared, was placed under arrest and transported to the Grand Forks Correctional Center for three counts of attempted murder and other criminal offenses.
Officers from the Grand Forks Police Department Criminal Investigation Bureau, Crash Reconstruction Team, and members from the Regional UAS Team assisted in the investigation.
