The Minnesota Department of Revenue is reminding residents that the IRS is retiring its Filing Information Returns Electronically (FIRE) system, used to e-file Form 1099 information returns, along with its Publication 1220 file format.
Beginning with the 2027 filing season, the Information Returns Intake System (IRIS) will be the only option to e-file Form 1099 with the IRS. Files will need to be in the IRS’s new defined XML format. For more information, please visit E-file information returns with IRIS on the IRS website.
The Minnesota Department of Revenue is working to accept the new file format in our e-Services system. By January 1, 2027, they will accept the new defined XML format and will no longer accept the Publication 1220 format. The Simple File and Manual Entry methods will remain options for e-filing information returns.
They will continue to provide updates as we implement this change.
Only Forms 1099 that have Minnesota withholding must be submitted to Minnesota Revenue. You must submit Forms W-2 and 1099 electronically via e-Services if you have more than 10 forms total.
