UMC ATHLETICS HIRES A NEW TRAINER

The University of Minnesota Crookston athletic department announced Shelby Conard as assistant athletic trainer. Conard will oversee the athletic training efforts for volleyball, baseball, and equestrian.

“We are excited to add Shelby to our athletic training staff,” said Health Care Administrator/Head Athletic Trainer Steven Krouse. “Shelby comes from a great background at North Dakota State and we think she will bring great expertise and skill to the position.”

Conard most recently served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for North Dakota State. During her time with the Bison, Conard provided care for the NDSU softball program. She provided medical coverage for all home and away events for the Bison. In addition, Conard communicated with team physicians, coaching staff, strength and conditioning staff, associate director of athletics, and athletic directors regarding care. She also was responsible for team medical referrals and scheduling, insurance claims and medical documentation. Conard also served as the trainer for the six-team Summit League Softball Conference Championship. In addition, she provided care for youth camps for NDSU men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, and softball.

“I’m so thankful to have been picked for this position,” Conard said. “I remember playing here when I played soccer at NMU and I never thought I’d end up working for a school that I used to play against! I’m excited to get started working with new sports and joining the Golden Eagle Athletics team!” 

Prior to North Dakota State, Conard was the intern/assistant athletic trainer at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., during the 2015-16 season. She provided care for all 18 athletic teams at Millsaps, specifically working with women’s soccer, cheer and dance, women’s basketball, and men’s lacrosse. During her time at Millsaps, Conard worked with Mississippi Sports Medicine Orthopedic Clinic for youth volleyball tournaments and Mississippi high school eight-man football state championship games.

In addition, Conard served as the head athletic trainer for Berkshire Soccer Academy during the summer of 2018. She was also a gym technician for Orthodepic Associates of Port Huron during the summer of 2015 and the summer of 2016. During her time there, she assisted and instructed patients with prescribed workouts and modalities and was part of the medical tent staff for the Blue Water Area Volleygrass Tournament.

Conard is certified by the National Athletic Trainer Association – Board of Certification. She is also a Certified Kinesio Tape Practitioner and is Graston Technique M1 trained. She is also a certified CPR/AED/First Aid – Healthcare Provider through the American Heart Association.

Conard graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from Northern Michigan University. She was also a four-year women’s soccer player for the Wildcats. Conard is currently working on completing a Master of Science in Advanced Athletic Training for North Dakota State University.
