UMC BASEBALL BEATS WINONA STATE TWICE IN WINONA

The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) Golden Eagles Baseball team continues to roll in conference play as they beat Winona State twice in the first two games of four this weekend with 6-3 and 5-1 victories in Winona. 

GAME ONE

FIRST INNING
UMC started the game with a leadoff walk to Sawyer Satrom (Soph. Portland, NS), and after a Golden Eagle strike-out, Caden Headlee (Jr. Fargo, ND) singled. The early threat came to an end as the next two UMC batters were retired and the game was still scoreless.
Winona State struck first in the bottom of the inning with a one-out double followed by a single for a quick 1-0 lead. 

SECOND INNING
Both teams were retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the second inning. 

THIRD INNING
UMC was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the inning. Winona State had a one-out walk in the bottom of the inning. The next two batters were retired and Winona State led 1-0. 

FOURTH INNING
The first two UMC batters were retired before Teddy Giefer (Sr. Courtland) was hit by a pitch and Kodi Miller (Jr. Grand Rapids) singled, and Danny Wensloff (Sr. Roseau) had the hit of the game with a three-run home run to give UMC a 3-1 lead. The home run was the first of the season for Wensloff.
Winona State had a two-out double before the next batter was retired and UMC led 3-1.

FIFTH INNING
UMC’s Kobe Senn (Soph. Fargo, ND)  led off the inning and was hit by a pitch, but the next three batters were retired. Winona State’s first two batters in the bottom of the inning before the Warriors had two singles and a double to score a run and UMC led 3-2 after five innings. 

SIXTH INNING
Jake Hjelle (Sr. East Grand Forks) led off with a double before the next batter flew out, but Hjelle advanced to third on the play. Miller hit a fly ball to centerfield that was deep enough to score Hjell to give UMC a 4-2 lead.
Winona State had a two-out single and double before the next batter was retired as UMC took a 4-2 lead into the final inning of the game.

SEVENTH INNING
UMC’s Senn led off the inning with a walk. After an out, Josh Dykhoff (Soph. Wadena) walked, and Headlee singled. After a pitching change, Hjelle doubled to score two runs, and UMC led 6-2 going into the bottom of the inning. Winona State’s first two batters grounded out before a double and a single to score a run to get within a 6-3 deficit. After a Warrior walk, the next batter struck out, and UMC won the series opener 6-3.

GAME TWO –

FIRST INNING
UMC’s first three batters of the game struck out in the first inning. Winona State’s first two batters were retired for a walk. The next Warrior batter flew out and the game was scoreless after the first inning.

SECOND INNING
The first two UMC batters were retired before Cole Hebl (Fresh. Hillsobor, ND) singled and Danny Wensloff was hit by a pitch. The next batter struck out and the Golden Eagle threat was over. In the bottom of the inning, Winona State led off with a single before a strike out. The Warriors were retired when they hit into a double play the game was scoreless after two innings.

THIRD INNING
The third inning was the charm for UMC as Satrom singled with one out. After a ground out, Headlee doubled to score a run for a 1-0 lead. Hjelle continued to swing a hot bat as he hit a two-run homerun for a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Winona State had a one out singled beefore the next batter flew out and UMC took a 3-0 lead into the fourth inning.

FOURTH INNING
UMC was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the inning. Winona State finally got on the board in the bottom of the inning. The lead off batter reached on a walk before the next two batters were retired. The next batter doubled and UMC’s lead was cut to a 3-1 lead after four innings.

FIFTH INNING
The first two UMC batters flew out and grounded out before Dykhoff singled, but was caught stealing to retire UMC. Two Winona State batters walked before the Golden Eagles made a pitching change and the next batter hit into a double play to get UMC out of a jam as they held onto a 3-1 lead. 

SIXTH INNING
UMC’s Headlee reached on another base hit and after a strikeout, Giefer singled  before the next two batters flew out. Winona State lined out before recording a single, but that Warrior was caught stealing at second base before the next batter grounded out and UMC took a 3-1 lead into the seventh inning.

SEVENTH INNING
UMC added some insurance runs in the top of the inning, as Mitch Goodwin (Sr. Prior Lake) led off the inning with a solo homerun for a 4-1 lead. Senn followed with a single and after a groundout, Dykhoff singled to score another run and UMC led 5-1. In the bottom of the inning, Winona State struck out and singled. The next two batters flew out and popped out and UMC led 5-1.

EIGHTH INNING
UMC was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the inning. Winona State led off the bottom of the inning with a walk and after a line out, the next batter hit into a double play and UMC took a 5-1 lead into the final inning.

NINTH INNING
UMC was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the inning. In the bottom of the inning, Winona State tried to put a rally together. The lead off batter singled, but the next three batters flew out and UMC completed the doubleheader sweep with a 5-1 victory.

UMC improves to 16-10 on the year and 10-6 in the NSIC and will take on Winona State for another doubleheader on Saturday.  Winona State drops to 12-15 overall and 9-8 in the NSIC.
