UMC BASEBALL SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER WITH MINNESOTA-DULUTH

The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) Golden Eagles Baseball team used a solid offensive, defensive, and pitching performance to beat the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs 12-4 in the first game and 8-5 in the second game of a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader played on a cool and windy day in Crookston.

GAME ONE
UMC hammered three home runs on their way to a way to a 12-4 victory in the first game of the doubleheader.

FIRST INNING
UMC pitcher Jake Osowski (Sr. East Grand Forks) had a great start as he retired Duluth in 1-2-3 fashion. UMC’s bats got going with the first batter as Sawyer Satrom (Soph. Portland, ND) led off with a single. The next two batters were retired before Jake Hjelle (Sr. East Grand Forks) hit a two-run homerun for a 2-0 lead.

SECOND INNING
Duluth had a one-out single before the next two batters were retired. Crookston’s Mitch Goodwin walked, and Kobe Senn doubled to score a run. Satrom singled to score a run, and Caden Headlee doubled to score a run for a 5-0 lead.

THIRD INNING
Duluth led the inning off with a double. After the next two Bulldog batters were retired, the next batter walked. The Bulldogs would get on the board after a single drove in a run, and a double drove in another run to cut the Golden Eagle lead to 5-2.
Josh Dykhoff (Soph. Wadena) led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run for a 6-2 lead.

FOURTH INNING
Duluth had a one-out solo homerun to get within a 6-2 deficit. Crookston answered in the bottom of the inning as Satrom reached on an error and advanced to second base. Headlee doubled to score a run for a 7-3 lead. Teddy Giefer walked before Hjelle singled to score a run for an 8-3 lead.

FIFTH INNING
The first two Duluth batters flew out. After a walk, the next Bulldog struck out.
UMC added some more runs in the bottom of the inning as the first two batters struck out and the Golden Eagles put a two-out rally together. Kobe Senn singled, Satrom doubled to score a run, and Headlee crushed a shot over the centerfield fence for a two-run home run, and UMC led 11-3.

SIXTH INNING
Duluth had a one-out double. After a flyout, they had a single to score a run to get within an 11-4 deficit.
Crookston scored an insurance run in the bottom of the inning when Hjelle and Dykhoff singled. After a strikeout, Danny Wensloff hit a sacrifice fly to center field to knock in a run for a 12-4 lead.

SEVENTH INNING
Duluth tried a late rally with two one-out singles before the next two batters flew out, and UMC won the game 12-4.

GAME TWO –

FIRST INNING
Duluth’s leadoff batter reached on an error before the next batter hit into a double play. After a single, the next batter struck out.
UMC’s Satrom was hit by a pitch before the next batter flew out. Satrom was caught stealing, and the next batter flew out, and the game was scoreless after the first inning.

SECOND INNING
The first two Duluth batters were retired before a single and a pop-out.
Crookston’s leadoff batter, Hjelle reached on an error before the next three batters were retired.

THIRD INNING
Duluth’s leadoff batter walked and after two outs, the Bulldogs doubled to score a run for a 1-0 lead.
Crookston answered as they did all day long. Goodwin reached on an error, Senn was hit by a pitch, and Satrom singled to load the bases. The next two batters struck out, and things weren’t looking good. The outlook changed with one swing of the bat by Hjelle, who crushed a shot over the left field fence for a grand slam, and the Golden Eagles led 4-1.

FOURTH INNING
Duluth responded with a single, double, a batter reached on an error, and a run scored. The next batter singled to score a run, and the Bulldogs were within a 4-3 deficit.
UMC was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the inning.

FIFTH INNING
Duluth was retired in 1-2-3 fashion. Crookston’s Headlee was hit by a pitch, and Giefer singled before the next three batters were retired and the Golden Eagles led 4-3.

SIXTH INNING
Duluth had a one-out single. After a flyout, a Bulldog walked, but the next batter struck out, and the threat was over.
Crookston was retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the inning and their lead was still 4-3.

SEVENTH INNING
Duluth started the inning with a single. After a flyout, another singled to score a run after an error on the center fielder, and the game was tied 4-4.
UMC answered once again. Senn was hit by a pitch, and after a strike out, Headlee reached on a fielder’s choice, where Senn was retired. With two outs, Giefer singled, and Angelo Pacyga singled to score a run for a 5-4 lead. Dykhoff followed with a double to score two runs for a 7-4 lead.

EIGHTH INNING
Duluth’s leadoff batter walked, and after a flyout, the Bulldogs had a bunt single. The next batter popped out before a single to score a run, and Crookston’s lead was 7-5.
Crookston got a big insurance run in the bottom of the inning as Goodwin singled with one out. Senn followed with a single and a run scored on a throwing error for an 8-5 lead going into the ninth inning.

NINTH INNING
Duluth was retired in 1-2-3 fashion and Crookston won the game 8-5 to complete the sweep of the doubleheader.

UMC is in fourth place in the NSIC standings, only a half-game behind St. Cloud State.

UMC improves to 28-14 overall and 22-10 in the NSIC. Duluth drops to 16-27 overall and 12-22 in the NSIC. The two teams will play at Noon on Sunday to wrap up the three-game series. KROX will have the game with an 11:30 a.m. pre-game show.
