UMC BASEBALL SWEEPS U OF MARY IN FINAL HOME GAMES OF THE SEASON

The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) Golden Eagles Baseball team beat the University of Mary Marauders 11-4 in game one and held on to win game two 11-10 in a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader at the UMC Baseball Field in Crookston. 

FIRST INNING
Mary and UMC came out swinging in the first inning. Mary started it off with a one-out single and a Josh Walker two-run home run for a 2-0 lead.
UMC answered in the bottom of the inning when Sawyer Satrom (Soph. Portland, ND) led off with a walk. After a sacrifice bunt by Caden Headlee, Teddy Giefer (Sr. Courtland) doubled to score a run. Jake Hjelle (Sr. East Grand Forks) walked, Josh Dykhoff (Soph. Wadena) was hit by a pitch, Kodi Miller (Jr. Grand Rapids) singled to score two runs for a 3-2 lead. After a ground out, Mitch Goodwin (Sr. Prior Lake) doubled to score two more runs, and the Golden Eagles led 5-2 after one inning.

SECOND INNING
Mary was retired in 1-2-3 fashion. UMC’s Teddy Giefer (Sr. Courtland) walked with two outs, and Hjelle followed with a single before the next batter retired.

THIRD INNING
The first Mary batter was retired before a double. The next two batters grounded out to end the top half of the inning. UMC’s Miller continued to swing a hot bat as he hit a solo home run to lead off the inning to give the Golden Eagles a 6-2 lead.

FOURTH INNING
Mary led off the inning with a solo home run to get within a 6-3 deficit. The first two UMC batters struck out and grounded out, but as they have all season long, the Golden Eagles fired up a two-out rally. Hjelle absolutely crushed the ball over the left-field fence for a solo home run. Dykhoff doubled before Miller hit his second home run of the game to score two more runs. The next batter, Danny Wensloff (Sr. Roseau), joined the home run party with a solo home run for a 10-3 lead.

FIFTH INNING
Mary’s first two batters were retired before a walk and a triple to score a run to get within a 10-4 deficit. UMC responded in the bottom of the inning with a Kobe Senn walk, Headlee singled, and Giefer flew out to center field to score Senn for an 11-4 lead. 

SIXTH INNING
Mary was retired in 1-2-3 fashion. UMC’s Miller singled to start the bottom of the inning before the next three batters were retired.

SEVENTH INNING
After a ground out, the next Mary batter singled. The next two batters were retired, and UMC won the game 11-4. 

UMC’s Brody Sorenson (Sr. Grand Forks, ND) picked up the win on the mound for a complete-game victory to improve to 7-1 on the season.

GAME TWO –

FIRST INNING
Mary was retired in 1-2-3 fashion to start the game. UMC was also retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the inning.

SECOND INNING
Mary broke the game open in the top of the second inning with a single and a walk. After an out and another single, the bases were loaded. Another single knocked in two runs for a 2-0 lead. Another single scored a run for a 3-0 lead. The next batter hit a home run to score three more runs for a 6-0 lead.
UMC’s leadoff batter flew out to start the bottom of the inning before Dykhoff walked. The next two batters struck out, and Mary took a 6-0 lead after two innings.

THIRD INNING
Mary had a one-out single before the next two batters were retired. UMC’s Goodwin walked. After a strikeout, Satrom singled, and Headlee reached on a fielder’s choice before a flyout, and Mary led 6-0 through three innings.

FOURTH INNING
Mary had a two-out single before the next batter was retired. UMC’s Hjelle singled and stole second to lead off the bottom of the inning. Dykhoff and Cole Hebl walked to load the bases. Wensloff walked to score a run, and the Golden Eagles trailed 6-1. Senn flew out to left field to score another run, and UMC trailed 6-2 after four innings.

FIFTH INNING
The first two Mary batters were retired before a single. The next batter grounded out and the Marauders were retired.
UMC’s Giefer singled with one out and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Hjelle walked and Dykhoff reached on a bunt single to load the bases. After a strikeout, Wensloff reached on an error, and a run scored. Goodwin doubled to score two more runs, and the Golden Eagles trailed 6-5. Senn followed with a double to score two more runs, and the Golden Eagles took their first lead of the game at 7-6.

SIXTH INNING
Mary was retired in 1-2-3 fashion. 
In the bottom of the inning, Headlee doubled, Giefer walked, and Hjelle singled to score a run. Dykhoff flew out to center field to allow another run score for a 9-6 lead. The next batter struck out, Danny Wensloff walked, and another run scored on a wild pitch for a 10-6 lead.

SEVENTH INNING
Mary was retired on a 1-2-3 fashion. In the bottom of the inning, Headlee walked with one out before the next two batters were retired.

EIGHTH INNING
Mary started the bottom of the inning with a single. The next batter walked before another single to load the bases. A passed ball allowed a run to score. After a strikeout, there was another single to score two runs, and the Marauders were within a 10-9 deficit.
In the bottom of the inning, UMC drew two walks before Goodwin singled to score a run for an 11-9 lead. The insurance run proved to be big. 

NINTH INNING
Mary hit a one-out home run to get within an 11-10 deficit. Later in the inning, Mary loaded the bases with two outs. IUMC pitcher Noah Grafsgaard got a huge strikeout, and the Golden Eagles won the game 11-10 to sweep the doubleheader.

UMC improves to 31-14 overall and 25-10 in the NSIC and will wrap up the regular season this weekend with two games on Friday and one game on Saturday at Northern State.  The NSIC tournament will start on Wednesday, May 8, at Bismarck, and KROX will have all the UMC games on the radio.
Mary drops to 22-23 overall and 18-17 in the NSIC and is currently in seventh place in the NSIC.
