UMC Men’s Basketball falls to Concordia St. Paul in tough road contest

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Men’s Basketball team were unable to control the paint as the Concordia St. Paul Golden Bears scored 50 in that area en route to a 93-68 win over the Golden Eagles on Friday night.

FIRST HALF –
The first half started quickly for the Golden Bears, as they opened the scoring on an 8-2 run, all 8 of those from Ben Kopetzki. Those shots ended up being the only shots he would take in the half, however, as Antwan Kimmons began to take control of the game, scoring 20 of the team’s 48 first half points. UMC did their best to keep pace, as a GD Deng 3-pointer cut the lead to 3 at 11-8, but 6 straight points from Kimmons brought the lead up to 19-10. From there, the Golden Bears continued their relentless pursuit on offense; 5 straight Marcus Skeete points made it 25-10, and after back-to-back 3’s from Reed Grant and Christian Bowen-Webb cut the lead to 9, a 10-3 run by Concordia St. Paul made the score 37-21 in their favor. More scoring from Kimmons and Cade Meyer then allowed for the Golden Bears to conclude the half on an additional 11-5 run, taking a 48-26 lead into the half.

SECOND HALF –
UMC had to get their offense off to a hot start if they had any hope of coming back in this contest. However, Kopetzki and Skeete continued their onslaught on offense, especially in the paint, where the Golden Bears scored 50 of their 93 points in the contest. Scoring began to pick up in this half, with both teams making shots. Then, with the Golden Bears leading 60-37, UMC put together their best run of the game, as a 7-0 run capped off by a Micah Garrett 3-pointer cut the lead to 16, at 60-44. The Golden Eagles were hoping that this would be the spurt that would allow them to get back into the game, but the Golden Bears responded in kind, going on an 8-0 run right back to take a 24-point lead. Both teams scored at virtually the same pace for the final 12 minutes of the half, with Concordia St. Paul outscoring UMC 25-24 down the stretch, but 10 of those 24 points came from the free throw line, as the Golden Bears ended up 16-26 from the free throw line en route to a 93-68 victory.

UMC falls to 3-14 on the season, 2-9 in conference play. Concordia St. Paul continues their good run of form, improving to 13-4 on the year, 8-3 now in the conference.
