POOR SHOOTING PLAGUES UMC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL IN LOSS TO MINNESOTA STATE-MOORHEAD

The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) Women’s Basketball team shot just 21% from the field in an 89-43 loss to Minnesota State-Moorhead in an NSIC game played at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead.

FIRST QUARTER –
MSU-Moorhead opened the games scoring with a three-pointer, and that was a theme for the night. Bren Fox (Soph., Norwood Young America) converted at the rim, bringing the Golden Eagles within 3-2 before Alyssa Peterson (Fr., Menahga) connected on a three-pointer giving Minnesota Crookston a 5-3 lead. MSU-Moorhead responded with a 13-0 run taking a 16-5 lead before Peterson made her second three-pointer bringing Minnesota Crookston within 16-8. The Dragons closed the quarter on a 12-0 run taking a 33-12 lead into the first quarter.

SECOND QUARTER –
The second quarter lacked much offense but allowed MSU-Moorhead to extend its lead. The Dragons opened the quarter with a 5-0 run before Alyssa Peterson scored 4-straight points for UMC trimming Minnesota Crookston’s deficit down to 40-16. The hosts closed the half on an 11-1 run taking a 51-17 lead into halftime. “We were just trying to find anybody who could come in a give us a lift,” said UMC head coach Mike Roysland. “We had to try and stay the course and beat them in the third quarter. Start over again and see what we could do in the second half.”

THIRD QUARTER –
MSU-Moorhead didn’t score a field goal until 5:50 into the second half with an Abby Guidinger (Jr., Waukesha, WI) three-pointer trimming the Golden Eagles deficit down to 63-23. The Dragons continued to dominate on both ends of the floor closing out the quarter with a 68-30 lead.

FOURTH QUARTER –
With the lead safely in hand, Minnesota State-Moorhead slowed down the pace for the final 10 minutes of the game, seeing their lead continue to expand before closing out an 89-43 win. “We just seem really apprehensive,” explained Roysland. “Nervous wouldn’t be the correct word, but it’s close to that. We’re just a little bit tentative and just need to see the ball go through. I just wish we could find someone that could get us off to a roll so we could build on it. I’ve seen these kids shoot and I know they can shoot a whole lot better than they have been lately. We’re just going to have to shoot our way out of it, stay really positive and try to move our way forward.”

Minnesota Crookston falls to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in NSIC play. The Golden Eagles return to the court on Saturday taking on Northern State in Aberdeen at 4:00 P.M. on KROX. MSU-Moorhead improves to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in conference action.
