UMC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SHOOT 19 PERCENT IN LOSS AT MINOT STATE

The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) Women’s Basketball team has had trouble shooting in the cavernous Minot State Dome in the past and the present wasn’t any different.  UMC only made 19 percent of their shots while Minot State made 53 percent on their way to a 76-45 victory in a game played in Minot, North Dakota. 

FIRST QUARTER
Minot State started the game on a 13-0 run making their first six shots of the game. The first five baskets were layups and the sixth shot was a three-pointer. UMC finally got on the board with a Mary Burke (Soph. Virginia) three-pointer, but Minot State responded with the next seven points for a 20-3 lead with 3:49 left in the quarter. UMC’s Burke stopped the Minot State run with another three-pointer and after another Beaver basket, Burke rattled home her third three-pointer of the game to bring the Golden Eagles within a 22-9 deficit with over two minutes left in the quarter. The teams played even the rest of the quarter and Minot State took a 26-11 lead into the second quarter.

SECOND QUARTER
The offense for both teams went cold with a combined six missed shots in the first two minutes. Minot State scored the first points of the quarter just over two minutes into the quarter, but UMC answered with a Jes Mertens (Fresh. Devils Lake, ND) basket. The offenses continued to struggle and halfway through the quarter, Minot State led 33-15. Minot State continued to pull away and built a 41-20 lead at halftime. Minot State shot 58 percent while making 19 of 33 shots, while UMC shot 18 percent while making six of 33 shots, three of the made baskets were from Mary Burke.

THIRD QUARTER
Minot State had another quick start in the third quarter and went on a 9-2 run to take a 50-23 lead four minutes into the quarter. The teams played even the rest of the way and Minot State took a 60-34 lead into the fourth quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER
UMC’s woes on offense continued in the fourth quarter as they were outscored 16-11 and Minot State cruised to a 76-45 victory. UMC shot 19 percent from the field while only making 11 of 58 shots. They were a solid 80 percent (16 of 20) at the free throw line. Minot State shot an impressive 53 percent (33 of 62) from the field.

UMC drops to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the NSIC North.  Minot State improves to 1-4 on the year. The teams will wrap up the weekend series on Saturday afternoon.
