Verna M. Wegge – Obit

Verna M. Wegge, 108, Halstad, MN, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 at the Halstad Living Center in Halstad.

This is Verna’s history in her own words:

I, Verna Mildred Aalgaard, was born in Norman County to Rudolph and Selma Holm Aalgaard on December 27, 1913. I was born on the old Silver place east of Shelly, MN where we lived for several years. I later moved with my family to a farm southeast of Shelly which they had purchased.

I was baptized Verna Mildred Aalgaard in the Lutheran faith at Augustana Lutheran Church and I was confirmed in Norwegian and it was the last class in Norse. I stayed with Grandma and Grandpa when I read for the minister Reverend Haukom and helped grandma with her household work. Aunt Ida made my confirmation dress.

I attended rural Wilson School which was 1-1/2 miles south of our place. We walked to school every day thru eighth grade. It was 3 miles both ways and it was terrible cold sometimes. Thanks to Grandma Aalgaard who knitted scarves and mittens.

I worked for several families helping with housework. I married Bordin Oliver Wegge on November 18th, 1933. He passed away on November 22, 1997. We were married 64 years.

Verna was the oldest of 5 children. She married Bordin in a parsonage in Halstad. Together they had 4 children, Joanne, Janice, Wayne and Diane and raised them on a farm near Cummings, ND. Verna was a loving mother who put her family first, they meant everything to her.

Verna enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, baking, cooking and before her macular degeneration, loved to read. Verna often “doodled” while talking on the phone with friends. She worked on the potato harvester and was used to milking the cows when Bordin was busy combining so he didn’t have to stop at milking time. Verna was Ladies Aid President, taught Sunday School, and was Sunday School Superintendent, and was a 4-H Leader as well.

Verna is survived by her daughters, Joanne (Arlen) Paulsrud, Buxton, ND, Janice Evashenko, Chesterfield, MO, and Diane Froehlich, Minnetonka, MN; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Rudolf and Selma; husband, Bordin; son, Wayne; granddaughter, Linda Paulsrud; sisters, Carol Orvik, Hazel Hanson, and Ardis Anderson; brother, Raymond Aalgaard; and son-in-law, Don Evashenko.

Funeral Service: 2:00 PM, Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at Salem Lutheran Church, Rural Cummings, ND.

Visitation: One hour before the funeral at the church.

Interment: Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Rural Cummings, ND.
