WINJUM SCORES 39, GETS 1,000th POINT OF HER CAREER TO LEAD PIRATES OVER EGF IN OT

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Basketball team needed an extra four minutes as they came away with a big 59-56 victory over the East Grand Forks Green Wave in overtime at East Grand Forks.  Halle Winjum scored 39 points and recorded the 1,000th point of her career in the second half.  Winjum broke the school record for points in a game with 39.  She also broke a school record with eight three-pointers in a game.

FIRST HALF – 
East Grand Forks started the scoring with a Mya Langerud steal for a layup, and on the next possession, Langerud made a three-pointer for a 5-0 lead in the first two-plus minutes of the game.  Crookston settled in, and Abby Borowicz drove the baseline for a layup to get the Pirates on the board.  On the next offensive possession, Halle Winjum made two free throws, and on the next trip down the floor, Winjum made a three-pointer for a 7-5 lead with 14:15 left in the half.  EGF tied the game at 7-7 when Ellie Marcott scored three minutes later.  Only to be answered by a Halle Winjum three-pointer for a Pirate 10-7 lead.  The teams battled back and forth, and the game was tied at 13-13 with four minutes remaining.  Crookston took over the rest of the half, ending on a 15-6 run.  Winjum scored 11 points, including a three-pointer at the buzzer.  Borowicz had four points, and the Pirates took a 28-19 lead into halftime.

SECOND HALF – 
East Grand Forks dominated the first five minutes of the second half as they outscored Crookston by an 18-5 margin.  East Grand Forks had five different players score in the run and were led by Camryn Adams’ two three-pointers for six points, and the Green Wave led 37-33 with 12:43 remaining. 
East Grand Forks led 42-35 with 9:35 left in regulation when a three-point shooting contest started.  Crookston’s Winjum had three straight three-pointers to give the Pirates a 44-42 lead. On the third three-pointer, Halle scored the 1001st point of her career.  EGF responded with an Adams three-pointer to regain the lead.  Crookston took the lead before the Green Wave took the lead back and led 53-50 with under 10 seconds left in regulation.  Crookston worked the ball around, Winjum found a wide-open Borowicz in the corner, and Abby made the three-pointer with 7.1 seconds left to tie the game at 53-53.  East Grand Forks had a chance to win the game, but Winjum knocked the ball away to force overtime.

OVERTIME – 
Crookston took the lead with two Winjum free throws and then added two more points when Halle stole the ball and went in for a layup to give the Pirates a 57-53 lead with 2:42 left in the four-minute overtime.  The Green Wave finally got on the board with a Tatem Votava offensive rebound and basket.  A few seconds later, Crookston’s Winjum made two more free throws for a 59-55 lead.  EGF made things interesting with 24.9 seconds left with a Votava free throw to get within one possession.  Crookston turned the ball over, and the Green Wave had a shot late, but it was blocked by Winjum, and the Pirates held on to win 59-56 in overtime.
