#10 Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis beats #7 Staples-Motley and #9 TRF

The #10 ranked Crookston Pirate Girls Tennis team had another great day of tennis as they beat #7 ranked Staples-Motley 5-2, and beat #9 ranked Thief River Falls4-3 for two big Section 8A victories at the TRF Triangular. “We had two great section matches today,” said Pirate Coach Gina Gunderson. “We had a great practice yesterday and they were ready to play today.”

CROOKSTON VS STAPLES-MOTLEY –
Crookston started the day taking on the #7 ranked Staples-Motley Cardinals, the team they beat in the Section 8A championship last season. Crookston won two singles matches and swept all three doubles matches to come away with a 5-2 victory.
Paige Abrahamson cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory at second singles, and Emelia Hoerner was dominant in a 6-0, 6-3 victory at fourth singles. At first singles, Kaylie Clauson played well but ran into Ronnie Noska, who is ranked #8 in the Class A Individual rankings, and Clauson came up short 6-2, 6-1. “Kaylie played well and played hard,” said Coach Gunderson.
In doubles, Crookston won all three matches. At first singles, Addie Fee and Ashlyn Bailey teamed up to win a three-set thriller. Fee and Bailey won the first set 6-1 before losing a tough 6-4 second set. In the third set, Fee and Bailey bounced back to win in impressive fashion by a 6-2 score. “They played a great match and it was fun to see them play together,” said Coach Gunderson.
At second doubles, Georgia Sanders and Logan Brekken continued to play great tennis together, dominating the match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
The third singles team of Chloe Boll and Emma LaPlante won a hard-fought first set 6-4 and were able to outlast their opponents in the second set for a 6-3 victory. “It was a really great match, and the girls battled the wind and played well,” said Coach Gunderson. “We tell the girls to be mentally tough, and they were able to adjust to the wind.”

CROOKSTON VS THIEF RIVER FALLS –
Crookston lost to Thief River Falls 5-2 in their first meeting of the season, but got some revenge as they were able to come up with a big 4-3 victory today.
Thief River Falls had a 3-2 lead with two matches remaining. Paige Abrahamson won her third singles match 6-3, 6-0, and the third doubles team of Chloe Boll and Emma LaPlante won a three-set match. They lost the first set 6-3, but bounced back in a big way to win the second set 6-1. In the third set, they continued their solid play and won 6-3 for the first two Crookston victories. “Those were big wins for us,” said Coach Gunderson.
The final two matches were second singles, with Crookston’s Ashlyn Bailey taking on Anna Lunsetter, and the first doubles match, with Crookston’s Kaylie Clauson and Georgia Sanders taking on the Prowlers’ Piper Green and Brianne Ellison.
The second singles match was the first to finish, with Ashlyn Bailey winning the first set in a marathon 7-5. Bailey won some big points early and went on to win the second set 6-2 to tie the team score at 3-3. “Ashlyn played a great match,” said Coach Gunderson. “She kept battling and seemed to get stronger as the match went along.”
The final match of the day was first doubles. Thief River Falls won the first set 6-1, and things weren’t looking good for the Pirates. Crookston’s Clauson and Sanders, who were playing for the first time together and settled in and won the second set 6-4. The Pirate duo continued their stellar play in the third set as they won 6-2, and the Pirates won the match 4-3. “Kaylie and G (Georgia) played a great match,” said Coach Gunderson. “The girls didn’t know they were the deciding match. The girls communicated well, played well, and it was a great day for Pirate Girls Tennis.”

Crookston is 14-5 on the year and will travel to the Litchfield tournament on Saturday. That will include three ranked teams with Crookston, Staples-Motley, and Litchfield.
