FEBRUARY FITNESS FEVER PROVIDES COMMUNITY EVENTS EACH SUNDAY

Polk County Public Health and the Polk County Wellness Coalition are ready to rock with the 2019 February Fitness Fever Events says Polk County Public Health Coordinator Kirsten Fagerlund.  “We’re excited again to have our committee offer fun events in February for the people in the region,” said Fagerlund.  “Our committee has been meeting for a few months and we’re grateful for our main core on the committee – Dale Knotek, Ardell Knutsvig, Linda Knutson and Laura Martinson.  They do a lot of the leg work behind the events that are on each Sunday.”

The events kick off this Sunday explains Fagerlund. “This Sunday we are meeting first at the Crookston Sports Center February 3 for free skating from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.,” said Fagerlund.  “We will have lots of sizes of skates for people to try on and use.  Last year, even though the skating event was canceled for a blizzard we still had 40 people show up and it was a fun afternoon.”

The second Sunday will get started a little earlier at 12:00 p.m. at the Crookston Community Pool. “The second Sunday is February 10 and we’ll be swimming at the indoor Crookston Swimming Pool,” said Fagerlund.  “Each year Widseth-Smith-Nolting donates the funds to pay for that so we have free open swim from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m.”

The third weekend we’ll feature outdoor winter activities. “Sunday, February 17 we’ll be outside at the sledding hill at Central Park,” said Fagerlund.  “Heading out from the main swimming pool area we’ll be doing cross country skiing, snowshoeing and sledding down the hill.  We’ll have some small bonfires, cocoa and a good time.  We had a great turnout for that last year and the skating loop at Central Park will be open too.”

The month’s events wrap up with a few fitness activities. “The final Sunday is February 24 at the new Functionally Fit building at the corner of Robert St. and South Main,” said Fagerlund.  “We’ll be doing some Zumba, the Treasurettes are coming down to teach some different dance.  Specifically, we find that hip hop is popular, so they’ll be demonstrating some of that.  And there will also be Tae Kwon Do.  Another great addition is Wonderful Life Foods has offered to do a make and take energy snack that day.  So people can just walk a little bit down the block to Wonderful Life Foods and experience that too.”

Attendees can get a ride to and from the events through Tri-Valley Opportunity Councils “The Bus” explains Fagerlund.  “The Bus will be available to do free transportation for people,” said Fagerlund.  “They ask that you call the Tri-Valley Office by 4:30 p.m. the Friday before so you have to plan a little ahead.  They will take people to and from the events.  Their final run will have to be a 2:30 p.m. each day so they will have to leave the event just a little early to get their drivers back to the bus garage.”
