#9A CROOKSTON PIRATE GIRL’S HOCKEY FALLS TO #2AA GENTRY ACADEMY 6-2

Gentry Academy scored the last four goals of the game, got three from Cara Sajevic to defeat the Crookston Pirates 6-2 in a Girl’s Hockey game played at the Crookston Sports Center tonight

Gentry Academy came out quickly to start the game getting the first six shots on goal, but it was the Pirates who would score the first goal on their first shot on net as Brekken Tull slid a pass through the crease area to Cassie Solheim who flipped it the open side to give the Prates a 1-0 lead. “Gentry came out very fast to start the game and continued throughout,” said Crookston head coach Emily Meyer, “but it was nice to see Cass getting the first one to give us a little early confidence.”  When playing a team of Gentry’s caliber, you have to stay out of the penalty box and although Crookston only took three penalties in the game, it cost them. The Stars scored on their only chance on the extra person advantage when one of their top scorers. senior Cara Sajevic, received a pass from defenseman Riley Reaves and blasted a shot by Pirate goalie Kambelle Freije to make it 1-1 with just under six minutes to go in the period. That would be all the scoring in the period. “We felt like we had the momentum,” said Meyer, “we just wanted to skate with them, play with them and I thought we did a really good job of doing that in the period.”

Gentry Academy’s twin sister defensemen combined to make it 2-1 early in the period on another power play chance. Janessa Gadzik took a pass from sister JuliAnna Gadzik and sniped a shot that was a whistler to give the Stars their first lead of the game. “It’s those unlucky bounces, if we could of stayed five on five it could of been a different outcome. It was their speed that knocked us off guard and being able to work against teams like this, we can learn from it,” said coach Meyer.  About a minute later Crookston would strike when a loose puck in the Gentry zone was picked up by Taylor Field and she got in the circle to the left of the Gentry goalie and put a wrister perfectly to her blocker side and it was 2-2 with 12 1/2 minutes to go in the second period. “That is what Taylor is really good at, ” said Meyer, “she’s a fast kid, she’s smart and she won the race and got the shot off quick past their goalie. That was good, as we were able to get some of that momentum back at that point.”  The Stars made sure it was just a “little” momentum, as they turned up the juice the rest of the period, scoring twice and outshooting the Pirates 17-3 in the period. Both Gentry Academy goals came with patience and terrific snap shots, first by defenseman Reaves and Sajevic again and it was now 4-2 after two periods as they scored with 36 seconds to go in the period. “Even giving up that late one, our girl’s went into the locker room with their heads held up high. Kambelle was doing an amazing job in net for us saving a lot of opportunities that Gentry was throwing at us. Kambelle was a little frustrated, getting down on herself. She’s a kid that works so hard on that position who wanted a different outcome.”

Gentry scored late to end the second period and scored 51 seconds into the third period on a scramble in front of the Crookston net and the puck was pushed in by Ana Myers to make it 5-2. The Stars would add one more in the third when Sajevic scored her third of the game to complete a hat trick as she walked up the slot and rifled a shot past Freije to make it 6-2. “They can really shoot the puck, they are fast, they move the puck so well,” said Meyer, “it’s a humbling experience, but that is what we want to see in games like this, to learn and make ourselves better. Our girl’s kept their composure and I switched up the lines a little bit to see in big games like this if we can find it mentally to rise above and I thought the girl’s did a really good job with that.”

Crookston is now 13-5-2 on the season and will host Bemidji on Tuesday. The Pirates and Lumberjacks played to a 1-1 overtime tie this past Tuesday in Bemidji. “The girl’s are looking forward to that game and it should be another great one,” said Meyer. The Pirates will play East Grand Forks for the third time this season on Thursday in Mayville, N.D. “We get to extend the rivalry again on Thursday,” said Meyer, “we’ve beaten them twice and look for a sweep,” said Meyer.
Gentry Academy, is 16-2 on the season and ranked #2 in the Minnesota Class AA polls, while the Pirates are ranked #9 in the State Class A polls.  Gentry will be at East Grand Forks tomorrow for an afternoon game before heading back to St. Paul.
