CROOKSTON GIRL’S HOCKEY BLANKED BY #2 RANKED WARROAD

The Crookston Pirates limited Warroad to just five goals in the first two periods before the Warriors put five more in the net in the third period for a 10-0 win in a Section 8A game played at the Gardens Arena in Warroad.

FIRST PERIOD –
Warroad wasted little time opening up the second with Reanna Smith finding the back of the net just 2:16 into the game. The Warriors doubled their lead 4:19 later with a Madison LaVergne goal. LaVergne added her second goal of the period with 7:02 to play in the opening frame giving Warroad a 3-0 lead after one period. “In the first period I thought we were maybe a little intimidated,” said Crookston head coach Tim Moe. “We were a step behind. Even the goals that they scored weren’t the best goals we’ve given up.”

SECOND PERIOD –
Crookston played its best hockey in the second period. The Pirates were led by Grace Koshney’s 22 second-period saves. The Warriors managed to break through twice in the final 4:23 of the period. Marlie Johnston scored on an assist from Lila Lanctot to make it 3-0. Geno Hendrickson added Warroad’s fifth goal with 2:26 to remaining in the period giving the hosts a 5-0 lead after two periods. “In the second period we came back out and were much more focused,” added Moe. “We did a much better job keeping them to the outside. Grace (Koshney) made some really big saves early on. It kind of got away from us towards the end of the period.”

THIRD PERIOD –
Warroad opened the flood gates in the final period. Abbey Hardwick initiated a running clock by giving the Warriors a 6-0 lead with her goal 3:43 into the final period. Tayla Hendrickson added a goal less than two minutes later giving Warroad a 7-0 lead. Geno Hendrickson scored her second goal with 8:10 to play before Marlie Johnston scored her second of the night to make it 9-0 with 6:13 remaining. Just before the final horn sound, Hannah Cornelisen closed out the scoring with 30-seconds to play securing a 10-0 win for the Warriors.”We got into some penalty issues and their coach never let up,” noted Moe. “Their best goal scorer scored a goal with 30-seconds left. We’re trying to develop a program overall while they’re trying to get to 10 goals. They never let up at all and their fourth line didn’t see the ice until there were fifteen seconds left.”

“We knew coming into this it would be tough for us,” summarized Moe. “It was important for us to see where we need to get to in order to reach our ultimate goal as a program as we’re rebuilding it right now.”

Crookston falls to 1-5 this season. The Pirates return to the ice on Friday when Crookston travels to take on Morris-Benson in Morris at 7:00 P.M. Warroad improves to 5-3-1.
